This is the biggest room in town! - villa on Tomešová in Brno

04 of November '24

This is the last film in which the "Homemakers" visit Brno. This time the Poznan team will show us a pre-war villa on Tomešova Street, located on the picturesque outskirts of Old Brno. The functionalist building is home to the designer's son - also an architect - who spent much of his colorful life there. What stories happened in Mojmir Lyselka's house?

Initiated during the New Plan festival in Poznań, the series "Homebuilders" has what we expect from a good series - engaging stories, colorful characters and beautiful interiors. The project is jointly organized by the SARP Poznań Branch, the Common Point Association, the Open Center and the Made in art Foundation. Each episode introduces viewers and viewers to the stories of exceptional interiors and their inhabitants.

bohemian functionalism at its best

The functionalist villa on Tomešová Street was built before the war. It was designed by renowned Brno architect and urban planner Mojmir Lyselko. His son, a professor of architecture at Brno's Mendel University, who spent most of his life in the house, talks about the building. There's a table designed by Le Corbusier, a sculpture from a 13th-century brewery, an ancestral hall and a conservatory that now houses a bedroom. And that's just the beginning.

The heart of the house is the living room - in the words of Mojmir Lyselko, one of the largest (if not the largest) rooms in Brno. The living room is so large that, despite the lack of walls, it has been divided into three functional zones, which differ in the way they are furnished and space arranged. The latter, despite its large size, has been managed very responsibly in the house - long corridors have been avoided, and all closets are built-in. The 90-year-old villa is in great condition, although at one point there was a step away from tragedy. What threatened the functionalist building?
