The asymmetrical house designed by the INOSTUDIO architekci studio was built in Silesia and more precisely in Tarnowskie Góry. The house is unusual in that it has an original shape that does not immediately bring to mind a standard suburban house. Some people refer to it as a church and laugh that it only lacks a cross. The peculiar shape of this house intrigues and puzzles. Was it decided only by the artistic vision of the designers?
A problematic or inspiring plot of land?
Nowadays many of us dream of having our own house with a garden, where we can take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. So, many investors buy a piece of land on which to put their dream house. Therefore, it is increasingly difficult to buy a plot of land that will be perfect. And it's poor surroundings, and it's a road from the wrong side, and it's poor ground conditions or mining damage.
Such was the case this time, too, when the architects were approached by a young couple who wanted to build a house on a difficult corner plot, with an entrance from the south, with a forest to the west, which, from human level, was already obscured by the building next door.
"Already after visiting the plot, we knew it wouldn't be easy," says the architects. - say the architects - "A difficult plot was one thing, but investors demanding out-of-the-box ideas were already a mix from which something very original could have been created."
Design concepts
We prepared the concept for two months. Or rather, two variants of it. One variant was the classic "modern barn," which was correct and polite. But we felt with our hearts that our clients wanted something original that would make their house stand out from many similar ones. Therefore, in the second variant, we showed something seemingly extravagant, which, however, resulted from the analysis of the plot and the surroundings.
Although the house had an original body, its form arose primarily from a very functional approach to the project. Several factors determined its shape: world directions, views and the location of two access roads. When creating the design scheme, we first found the optimal place of the solid, providing the best possible view - to the forest, then enlarged it and formed it in such a way that a sheltered terrace was created. We decided to lower the house at the front and raise it at the back. Finally, we designed the roof slope in such a way as to provide the best possible sunlight to the courtyard and interiors. The result was a sculpted body covered with an asymmetrical roof.
However, the most important task remained before us. Presentation of the concept to investors. Will the house meet their requirements, will they like it? Will it not stand out from the crowd too much? However, we knew that none of the design decisions we made were random. Everything was logical and stemmed from something. What was superficially strange was actually practical.
We were the first to present a vision of a "modern barn." Already at the time of its presentation we knew that it was not good. The investors spoke little and showed no enthusiasm. At the end of the presentation, they only said that the concept was correct for them but that there was no "ravishing effect" that they expected. This is what we expected. So we informed them that we had another version of their house for them, which was closer to us from the beginning, but we weren't sure if it would also be "the thing" for them that it was for us.
Just as we thought, the second variant was a hit. It immediately aroused the emotions of the Investors. We told, they reacted vividly. They asked, we explained why it looked this way and not that way.
Thus, the investors became the owners of an original and original house, which catches the attention of passers-by, delights and subtly signals to others that someone who lives in it is as bold and unique as their house.
It also turns out that the asymmetrical house breaks stereotypes and sets new trends. Suburban landscapes have long accustomed us to architectural symmetry. But it turns out that asymmetry, too, can appeal even to proponents of classic designs.
The investors admitted to us after time that before we started working together, they themselves did not know that they would be so open to the unconventional and original ideas we presented to them. However, they were convinced by the fact that nothing in the project was accidental, everything was coherent, and on top of that it met all their functional and aesthetic needs.
And we, as designers, have also learned something since that presentation. If we ourselves feel that a concept appeals to us, is close to our heart, and on top of that it goes well and is in line with the Investor's guidelines, there is a good chance that when the Investor sees it and understands what we do, he will be as delighted.
Interiors
The interiors of the asymmetrical house in Tarnowskie Góry, through the sculptural shape of the building itself and its location in relation to the world sides, are full of natural light.
In the design of this house, we wanted an interesting and varied exterior and interior space resulting from the environment, world directions and sunlight. At the same time, we wanted the building not to overwhelm and become a background in the daily life of its inhabitants.
Thanks to the appropriate placement and proportion and size of the windows, we managed to achieve an interesting play of light inside the house at different times of the day and year.
Due to the rather complicated interior space resulting from its form, in order not to further overwhelm the users with the amount of materials and textures, we proposed minimalist interiors with a lot of white and smooth surfaces.
We varied this white asymmetrical space, changed during the day by the sunlight coming in from different directions, with natural materials such as concrete, wood, glass and black additions of window frames, fireplace and furnishings.
The entire composition of the house's interiors is complemented and enlivened by greenery.
