"10 Questions to an Interior Designer" is a series of short talks inspired by the series "10 Questions to...". This time our attention is turned to interior designers. In today's episode, Ewelina Ozdoba talks about her approach to design.
Ewelina Ozdoba - one half of the duo that runs the Warsaw design studio KRES Architekci. The office deals with residential and commercial interior design, individual architectural projects and complex turnkey projects.
1. For me home is...
An oasis to which I feel like returning. A place that gives me peace and the opportunity to regenerate.
2. The key to a successful interior design is....
There is no concept of successful interior design for me. A concept that for one person will be successful in terms of functionality or aesthetics, for another may be completely wrong. Hence, in the design process, we are not so much concerned with executing a successful interior design, but primarily focus on listening to the user's needs as much as possible and creating a space for him or her in which he or she will find themselves 100%. Without the viewer, designs would be the same or predictable. It is the users and their stories that give our spaces the individual characteristics that set our projects apart.
3. I look for inspiration....
In travel-materials, structures, shades. From each trip I bring back impressions, which I then weave into our designs to some extent. The impressions mentioned can be memorized spaces, images, but also color combinations, tastes, smells.
4 In cooperation with a developer the most important thing is....
Mutual trust and cooperation on a partnership basis.
5. my favorite design style is....
I find myself well in different interior styles and take great pleasure in creating spaces for completely different users. On the other hand, if I had to answer the question of what interior I find myself best in, it would be minimalism with a "twist". I really like uncluttered, unstylized spaces, which are "something" through the use of interesting materials and structures, highlighted by appropriate lighting. To this, I would add an accent in the form of an interesting and surprising form that breaks up the space and makes it not so serious. With the accumulation of stimuli and various arrangement possibilities that accompany me due to my profession, an interior in which I feel comfortable should be as ascetic and uncomplicated as possible.
6. The most valuable object in my home is....
I don't get attached to objects, while I highly value any items that are the result of artistic craftsmanship or heirlooms.
7. The most common mistake that is made when doing interior design by ourselves is....
Wanting to accumulate all the trends in one place and not having enough storage space. A non-functional layout can spoil even the most beautifully chosen materials.
8. My favorite material is...
All materials that are authentic. Whether it's a concrete ceiling with a reflected formwork texture, wood, polished concrete floor, or natural stone.
9. A trend that I wish would pass away already is....
Any interior trend that becomes very firmly established in the minds of users gets boring after a while. Unfortunately, to us architects, definitely faster. This is due to the very high repetition in the projects and realizations that appear in catalogs, magazines, industry portals and social media. Therefore, it would be wise to approach trends sparingly, with the principle: timeless, good materials are always "on trend" and will stand up for themselves. I would suggest when creating a space, to follow not so much trends, but your inner voice. Interiors should be "some". Let's not be afraid of that. Such an individual spark is very welcome in my opinion. I've noticed that a trap our observers often get caught in is making 100% safe choices and being afraid to use contrasting materials that turn the space upside down. Here the rule of thumb: 90% safe, with 10% crazy will definitely work. Walls can always be repainted, and accessories, which often completely change the character of the interior, can be replaced at any time.
10. Someday, I would like to live in....
A house with a panoramic window overlooking the sea or mountains, in a Mediterranean climate. I think that in this even temporary escape to warm and sunny climates, I will not be original.
