Choosing the right flooring is a key element in the process of decorating a house or apartment. Not sure how to make this decision? Learn about designer Anastasia Kudashova's advice.
Step 1: choose your style
Before you go shopping, choose the style in which you want to decorate your interior. A clear vision will make your decision-making easier and help you achieve a harmonious arrangement.
- It will be helpful to create a moodboard with inspiring designs to serve as a visual guide. If you prefer a modern, minimalist style, opt for flooring in shades of gray, white or beige. These colors will provide an elegant and sophisticated look. Rich, warm wood-look finishes are ideal for creating a cozy, rustic atmosphere. Dark floors, on the other hand, will enhance the charm of a modern farmhouse, but can also add an authentic touch to a more eclectic space, the expert explains.
If you change your interior design often and like to try new solutions, opt for light oak flooring. Such a covering will create the perfect backdrop for arranging experiments.

Step 2: consider the square footage and light
The color of the floor has a very big impact on how we perceive a room. A light-colored floor will optically enlarge a small interior, but you will get the best effect by juxtaposing it with dark furnishings.
- If you are arranging a small space, consider using a floor in beige tones combined with strong accents in the decorations - such a contrast will optically "open" the room. In larger rooms with plenty of natural light, you can confidently bet on darker floors, which will add depth without reducing their spaciousness, the designer advises.
Light is also important. After all, different intensities and types of lighting affect the appearance of the floor. It's a good idea to test the samples in varied conditions - both in natural and artificial light. This will make sure you make the right choice.

Step 3: bet on timeless solutions
Flooring is an element that stays with us for years. A survey conducted by Quick-Step shows that as many as 20% of respondents haven't changed it for more than a decade, and 19% have never done so! So it's important that the pavement is timeless. A classic wood-look finish is a safe choice for both aesthetics and durability. Such flooring easily adapts to different interior styles and makes it easy to replace accessories and modify the arrangement.
- If you wish to add a unique character to the room, opt for colorful accents, such as a bright yellow armchair or a red coffee table. These types of elements can be easily replaced when you want to refresh the space, which is much easier than installing new flooring," explains Anastasiia Kudashova .
It is worth remembering that not only trends change over time, but also our tastes. A neutral, classic floor will create a solid base that will allow you to flexibly adapt your decor to changing tastes.
