When an apartment starts to run out of space, sometimes a simple renovation or change in its functional layout is enough. Proof of this is the metamorphosis carried out by interior designer Kasia Orwat.

The need for change
After thirteen years of using a 65-square-meter apartment, its owners came to the conclusion that it no longer fulfilled all the necessary functions. First of all, two separate rooms were needed for the children - a girl and a boy, who were already big enough that it was time to create a separate corner for them. The family's pet cat Tiger also had to find his place here. However, instead of changing the premises for a new one, the owners decided to simply renovate. They invited interior designer Kasia Orwat - owner of interior design studio ORWAT Design- to join them.

New functional layout
The children's common room and the parents' bedroom were adapted into two separate children's rooms - one for a boy and one for a girl. The parents did not want to give up their bedroom, so it was arranged in the existing kitchen, and the latter was arranged as an annex in the living room. However, this is not the end of the changes. The existing bathroom shared space with the toilet, and a capacious dressing room was created in place of the former toilet.
- Thanks to the detailed, every-centimeter, thought-out layout of the space , we gained not only an additional room, but also, for example, a work space with a bookcase and a place to play guitar in the new bedroom created in place of the kitchen. However, this required a lot of arrangement compromises and clever solutions. And so to enlarge the space of the rather cramped living room, I chose sliding double doors between the bedroom and living room," says designer Kasia Orwat.

New design
Such large modifications in the functional layout of the apartment also entailed a complete change in the design and function of the furnishings in individual rooms. For practical reasons, the designer decided to make rounds in the body of the dressing room and kitchen furniture. Rounded, oval forms are also used for mobile furniture - a hocker, a coffee table, a bedside table. They are not only safe, but also multifunctional.
- A stool can be a bedside table or an auxiliary seat in the living room when guests arrive. The chair from the dining room works well in the bedroom behind the desk, and modern portable lamps, with an additional function, cable-free operation, will work well next to the bed, but also the sofa when we want to read in the living room," explains Kasia Orwat.

Coordinated duos
The mobility of the furnishings and their dual functions, were dictated by the need to maximize the use of available space. However, they also translate into interior design. Two planes of textures - color and wood - intermingle in the arrangement. Wood finishes also repeat this principle of binarity. Indeed, on the floor we find oak, and on the furniture - walnut. The latter is combined with warm beige, which is repeated in the door woodwork and baseboards. This color combination is perfectly matched by tiles with a stone pattern, which were introduced in the bathrooms and repeated on the wall above the countertop in the kitchen. In the living area, the colors of nature have been joined by the muted green of the sofa upholstery, which can also be found in the bedroom, where a green upholstered bed reigns supreme. The warm mood is complemented by curtains made of natural material and rattan elements - chairs, flower pot and, of course, the cat bed. This is because everything here is carefully thought out, not only in terms of function, but also aesthetics.
