How to illuminate the hallway and corridor?

The corridor and hallway are places that often lack access to natural light. Therefore, it is so important that the lighting in the passageways is practical. So how to choose the right one to move freely and comfortably through the apartment, but also to create a unique visual effect?

The entrance area is the first place that visitors see. It is a kind of invitation to further explore the house or apartment. That is why it is so important to be able to move around it freely. It is provided, among other things, by well-designed lighting. The right quality and placement of light is crucial in the design of a corridor. Usually this space is devoid of windows, so it is not illuminated by natural daylight. The second extremely important issue is the effect we want to build with the light. The hallway and corridor are areas with little design potential, so the choice of light may turn out to be the only decoration of this space. In addition, this is a standard zone, with a small area, so it is worth working with light in this area to optically enlarge it. The illumination of the circulation space can consist of several types of lighting, such as general lighting without specific areas highlighted by a stream of light, and local lighting that illuminates a specific area. Consideration of each of these aspects significantly improves not only the functionality of the usable space, but also its visual perception.

Lighting tricks

Narrow or short corridors, can be visually lengthened by placing light sources very close together. You can also use LED tape at the baseboards along the entire length. This solution makes the corridor appear much longer. An increasingly common solution is also to suspend the closet in the hallway, and then illuminate the lower recess. This will make the heaviest element of this space, i.e. the closet, look light. If we additionally add a mirror and illuminate the interior with reflected light, we gain even more space. Using the right lighting, that is, one over whose parameters we have control - we can quickly create any effect in the room. By means of skirting lighting, we can also direct the eyes of those entering the apartment to a specific part of it, such as the tiles on the floor. In this way, we will expose those elements of the room that we care about, and we will be able to show off the solution or interior design used.

What type of lighting to choose?

It all depends on what effect we want to achieve. Often wanting to make the hallway more attractive, we hang art on its walls or install stucco. A spot light will beautifully highlight these elements. On the other hand, a point lightfixture with a wide angle of light distribution aimed at the wall will make the corridor look wider. For long hallways, a spotlight is definitely a better choice, as it visually shortens the length of the hallway. In barn-type houses, where the corridor is very long, such a solution will work well. The interiors of such houses are also high. So it is worth directing a light source with very narrow angles to the floor, so that it illuminates precisely a small part of the floor. Then the interior doesn't seem so high anymore, and thus cozier. We also don't get so-called arches on the walls, which can cause disorientation in the space and don't look aesthetically pleasing. In addition, we achieve a feeling of intimacy with this type of lighting.
