Contemporary design of educational spaces takes into account more and more aspects of inclusion and accessibility for all students/students. An example of such an approach is the project by Magdalena Nowakowska of Poznan University of Technology. Her master's thesis, defended under the supervision of Magdalena Gyurkovich, PhD, is a concept for an inclusive-sports high school.

location conducive to education and sports

The designed building was located in Poznań on the Saint Lazarus estate in the area of Hetmańska Dmowskiego and Krauthofera Streets. The selected site, with an area of more than 65 thousand square meters, was subjected to detailed analysis to make full use of its potential. As part of the research, extensive literature studies were conducted surveys of prospective users/users and an in-depth interview with a person involved in the care of a child on the autism spectrum. The conclusions of the research became the basis for the formulation of design guidelines.

functionality and aesthetics in one

The designed building consists of several functional zones including a school with a dormitory sports facilities and a sports hall. Each of these parts has been accentuated by appropriate spacing and height differentiation. The school zone was moved as far away from the busy street as possible to reduce noise and create optimal learning conditions. The building is south-facing, which allows for maximum light in the classrooms. The facades on the various floors were designed in a differentiated manner to adjust light levels to the needs of the users/users. The educational part is distinguished by a white color scheme, while the sports area is highlighted with a copper shade.

On each floor there are bathrooms adapted to the needs of people with limited mobility and the doors and passageways are wide and without thresholds. There is a separate entrance for students on the autism spectrum, as well as a special integration area that serves as a quiet zone during classes and a common space afterwards.
