  1. Weronika Horoszkiewicz of Bydgoszcz University of Technology designed the Center for Eating Disorders in her engineering thesis.
  2. The design is a response to the lack of specialized psychiatric facilities and is supported by scientific research, including a patient survey.
  3. The facility included private and public spaces, responding closely to the needs of potential patients.
  4. The building was designed with natural materials and covered with vegetation, so it blends harmoniously with its surroundings.

Polish health care suffers from a lack of many specialized and accessible facilities, and this is clearly visible in psychiatry as well. A {tag:studenci} from Politechnika Bydgoska under the supervision of Dr. Eng. arch. Małgorzata Kaus and Daria Bręczewska-Kulesza, Ph.D., designed the Center for Eating Disorders, which addresses the needs of patients in a specialized way and takes advantage of the therapeutic properties of the surrounding greenery.

The designed Center for Eating Disorders was located by the author in the vicinity of the Oncology Center and green areas: Forest Park and the Gdansk Forest, which are conducive to the medical functions of the facility, as well as allowing to use the therapeutic influence of nature. The facility can be easily reached using nearby public transportation or bicycle paths.

comprehensive care in comfortable conditions

The project aims to draw attention to the lack of specialized medical facilities dedicated to the treatment of eating disorders in Poland. These disorders, although a significant social and epidemiological problem, are marginalized in the psychiatric system. The Center for Eating Disorders aims to create a modern therapeutic center that responds to the needs of patients, providing comprehensive care in a comfortable environment, while taking into account the therapeutic impact of the environment

- writes the author, Veronika Horoszkiewicz.

The author preceded the creation of the center with scientific research and conducted a survey of patients of existing facilities to best understand their needs. Thanks to this, the designed facility is likely to stand out from other places of psychiatric assistance, and at the same time serve as a space for relaxation, study or even entertainment.

natural and modern for therapeutic purposes

The use of natural materials and green technologies makes the designed building integrate harmoniously with its surroundings. The facade of the building is covered with overgrown openwork lamellas made of natural wood. Greenery gives the impression of encroaching on the building's interior through large glazing and a roof covered with vegetation. The designer has also included gardens for aromatherapy and walking paths dedicated specifically to therapy.

The building was divided into three zones: hospital, consultation and administration. The hospital zone is a two-story hospital, with an emergency room, kitchen and single, double and quadruple rooms for patients. Individual and psychiatric therapy takes place in the consultation zone, while the administrative zone contains laboratories, offices and technical rooms. The Center for Eating Disorders can also be visited by passersby with a pharmacy, restaurant or cafeteria.

The areas around the building have deliberately not been significantly developed, and in order to preserve their natural state, an underground parking lot has also been planned instead of an above-ground one. The surrounding abundant greenery, along with heathland and natural bodies of water, are intended to support patients' recovery, as well as affect their sense of safety and comfort.

The Center for Eating Disorders in Bydgoszcz is a project responding to the urgent need for specialized medical centers dedicated to the treatment of eating disorders. Its implementation will allow effective treatment of patients in conditions conducive to their recovery, while offering a modern approach to the design of the therapeutic space

- adds the author.
