What will the school on Asphalt Street look like?

05 of December '19

A new elementary school building with a kindergarten and sports facilities will be built in Wroclaw's Wojszyce district, adjacent to the Jagodno housing estate, on Asphaltowa Street. In the competition organized by the Municipality of Wroclaw for the development of an architectural concept of the complex together with the development of the plot, the winner was the Major Architekci studio. Congratulations!

The competition jury also awarded the projects of the studios: M.O.C. Architekci (2nd prize), CH+ Architekci (3rd prize) and Heinle, Wischer und Partner Arch itekci (honorable mention).

1st prize - Major Architects

Intended for the construction of a school for one thousand students and a kindergarten for two hundred children, the plot and its immediate surroundings are currently undeveloped. According to the provisions of the Local Plan, low-rise, mainly single-family residential buildings will be built around the site in the future, as well as a park on the eastern side.

The design assumptions included adjusting the scale of the building to the surrounding development, both existing and planned, as well as fitting the school edifice into a strip layout referring to the proposed division of plots for single-family housing. The architects also included in their concept: dividing the building into smaller blocks and creating semi-open urban interiors, creating five sections depending on the function of the space and the age of the students, and zoning for noise.

The main axis of the building, according to the designers' concept, is determined by the lobby, which connects the various zones and functions and is the center of the school's daily life, a meeting place and a place for organizing events and workshops. Adjacent to the hall, public spaces have been located - a sports hall, dining room, library and common room. As the authors of the project emphasize, thanks to the glazing, the lobby opens both to the interior of the building, allowing, for example, a view of the sports hall, and to the outside.

In turn, the mid-class lobbies located in the wings of the building are intended to be informal extensions of classrooms. By choosing the right width of the corridors and lighting them, the architects have designated the halls as places for studying, relaxing and playing in smaller groups.
