This is what the center of the Gdansk South district may look like. The competition has been settled

14 of November '24

The jury decided not to award the first prize in the competition for the concept of the center of Gdansk South. Two second and two third prizes were awarded, as well as an honorable mention, and the results are to be used to prepare the assumptions of the local plan.

The chaotically developing southern part of Gdansk, which is inhabited by about 100,000 people, lacks services and recreational areas. Only now the City is making preparations for the creation of a new neighborhood center, which is expected to help turn the bedroom community into a place where residents will want to spend time. The center is to be built on a plot of approximately 6 hectares, located at the junction of the Jasien and Ujeścisko-Lostowice districts (at the intersection of Adamowicza, Warszawska, Lawendowe Wzgórze and Jabłoniowa streets). According to the City's assumptions, "it is supposed to realize the idea of a fifteen-minute city, where widely understood services are located within walking distance from the place of residence." A two-stage urban planning and architectural study competition for the concept of shaping the district center was announced by Gdansk in May this year. Nineteen works were submitted. The results were announced on November 13 during the inauguration of the international conference "Architecture of the Metropolis."

The center is to (finally) respond to the needs of residents

- We are looking for ideas on how to create a new center at the intersection of several neighborhoods, we want to realize various needs of residents here: a swimming pool, an ice rink. We also know that we need to expand the existing streetcar terminus, including a streetcar depot and later a bus depot. And this will all be a process spread over years," said Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, mayor of Gdansk.

The jury was composed of: Natalia Balcerzak, president of SARP Wybrzeże, Edyta Damszel-Turek, director of the Gdańsk Development Office, Ewa Kuryłowicz - chairwoman of the competition court, Piotr Lorens, Architect of the City of Gdańsk, Jacek Droszcz, Ryszard Gruda, Slawomir Gzell, Paweł Wład. Kowalski, Joanna Rayss, Barbara Tusk, Zbigniew Mysza, Czerniewska, Anna Golędzinowska.

No main winner was chosen in the competition. The jury decided to award two second and two third prizes, as well as an honorable mention. All the works appreciated in the competition will serve to further shape the central space for the southern districts of Gdansk. The awarded projects will receive cash prizes from a pool of PLN 140,000.

AWARDS AND JUSTIFICATIONS OF THE COMPETITION COURT:

2nd AWARD, AUTHORS: X86 Architects Tomasz Małachowicz, Rafał Stemporowski, Tomasz Małachowicz.
The compositional axis, the functional-spatial program and the communication layout deserve special emphasis. In the case of the compositional axis, the authors aptly located it in the northwest and southeast directions - starting from the dominants with the traffic square, through the promenade with the social square, and ending with the green square with the library building. This solution is a spatial coherence - it provides an appropriate hierarchy, which facilitates orientation and movement within the entire establishment.

II AWARD, WORK ENTITLED. HEART OF THE SOUTH, DESIGNERS: Michał Strupiński, Ada Jaskowiec, Kinga Murawska, Zuzanna Sekuła.

The award was given due to:
- delineation of the main north-south axis (cardo), connecting the hub with the mobility hub through the central square to the park square;
- delineation of a local east-west axis (decumanus) connecting the new service center with neighboring neighborhoods;
- basing the cardo axis on architectural dominants with public functions;
- integration of public, semi-private and private spaces giving a sense of inclusiveness and freedom of movement;
- the urban character of the frontage of Lavender Hill Street;
- the seamless blending of natural and built-up areas.

III AWARD, AUTHORS: JAZ+Architekci Sp. z o.o.: Andrzej Jaworski, Julian Żmijewski, Marianna Waśniewska, Joanna Lipnicka, Julia Krawczyk, Zuzanna Trzcińska, Klaudia Wujkowska, Aleksandra Wiktorko - Rakoczy, Maja Skibińska, Martyna Kędrzyńska.

The work presents a successful attempt to inscribe a multifunctional centrally located development in a strong cultural and natural context of the place. The presented idea of a "compact city" is realized on the basis of a consistently designed urban layout, based on clear, logically connected pedestrian routes and internal squares intermingling with green squares and intimate parks.

Particularly noteworthy is the way of shaping spaces covered with greenery, taking into account the principles of creating green infrastructure and using the existing topography of the area. The strong point of the work is the proper solution of connections with the surrounding buildings, by linking and continuing the existing pedestrian routes and traffic axes.

III AWARD, WORK OF GREEN DIALOGUE SPACE, AUTHORS: Janusz Gujski; Izabela Burda, Jacek Józekowski, Jakub Gorzka

The work in an attractive way, in accordance with urban planning canons, accentuates the location of the South Center on the scale of the entire district of Gdansk South.(...) The project envisages the implementation of an axis of public space, emphasized by height dominants and a created transition between large objects with a service function. The form of these dominants and their size are subject to discussion and possible corrections, but the axis creates a clear, orderly urban structure of this part of the city.

EXCELLENT MENTION, GREEN BRIDGE WORK, AUTHORS: Alicja Maculewicz, Eryk Szczepański, Tomasz Bekas
The work aptly defines the new urban landscape and its programmatic and functional concept due to:
- legibility of the composition of the whole in relation to: the city, the neighborhood and the elements that make up the development;
- an attempt to master the difficult scale of traffic arteries through the proposal of a linear park and proposals for frontage for the front of the complex from Warszawska Street;
- creation of greenery as a foreground of the South Park with the designation of functional tasks for it,
- appropriate structure of quarters - blocks of residential buildings.

The announced competition is a study, which means that we will still have to wait for the results in the space. On the basis of the works, the assumptions for the local plan under procedure will be refined.
