The project of Restudio Jacaszek Architekci studio from Gdansk and Saneccy from Krakow has won the competition for the concept of developing Długie Ogrody Street in Gdansk. The architects want to free the street from an excess of cars, proposing a linear urban garden with a restored linden alley and a free composition of low greenery. A place for meetings, rest and recreation is to be created.
The results of the competition for the concept of developing the 2.7-hectare area adjacent to Długie Ogrody Street in the center of Gdansk were announced on March 14. This important urban space, which is an extension of the Royal Way and Stągiewna Street, was largely destroyed during World War II, and its current appearance is far from its historical one. To make matters worse, the representative part of the city is dominated by cars, and the street has a transit character. The designers were tasked with restoring the site to its former character, including restoring the avenue and arranging parking.

in place of transit - a green meeting place
The first place and a prize of PLN 50,000 was awarded to the studio Restudio Jacaszek Architekci sp. z o.o. from Gdansk together with Saneccy Sp. z o.o. from Krakow. The team proposed contemporary architectural forms, subtly referring to historical details and materials and colors characteristic of Gdansk. The project assumes traffic calming and the realization of a 6m wide (2x3m) street, parts of which run through elevated shared zones (e.g., the square in front of Stągiewna Gate, the square in front of St. Barbara Church). The authors of the winning work divided the Long Gardens into two basic functional zones:
* a sunny "flaner" (French: flâneur - vagabond, stroller) zone freed from car traffic. This zone additionally includes a linear urban garden with a reconstructed linden avenue and a free composition of low greenery, which is a place for meetings, rest and recreation.
* A shaded traffic zone with calmed car and bicycle traffic.

Design solutions reconcile the apparent contradiction between modernity and history. The new image of Długie Ogrody, created in a contemporary spirit, is strongly inspired by historical elements. This assumption stems from a sense of responsibility for the shape of Gdansk's important public space and an awareness of the material and immaterial value of the former Royal Route, the authors of the winning project emphasize.
And they add that the concept assumes the formulation of the main principle of shaping the revitalized public space as a road based on two city squares and a "travel station": the square in front of the Stągiewna Gate, the square behind the Żuławy Gate and the travel station, which is, as it were, an indispensable point of support in relation to the two opposite squares - the square in front of St. Barbara's Church.
The transformation of an important space in the center of Gdansk will not come cheap. After all, the cost of the work designers have crazy at 51 million zlotys.

The competition received 20 works from authors at home and abroad. The jury evaluated the projects of authors from Austria, France, Italy and Poland. Four proposals were not subject to evaluation due to failure to meet the competition requirements. The remaining sixteen were evaluated in terms of architectural and urban composition values, affecting the attractiveness of the neighborhood. The quality and correctness of the adopted functional-spatial solutions and the historical aspect were also very important.
