In the 14th edition of the Polish Green Building Association's "Green Building Awards", the main award in the category of sustainable multi-family residential development went to the Atrium Oliva development in Gdansk.

PLGBC Green Building Summit 2024 is a competition organized by the Polish Green Building Association (PLGBC). The jury evaluates projects submitted in 11 categories in terms of architecture and aesthetics, sustainable construction and social aspects and innovation. This year, the main award in the category of sustainable multifamily residential development went to the Atrium Oliva project, which was built by Allcon in Oliva, Gdansk.

Atrium Oliva project by Roark Studio

The design of the development, to be completed in 2024, was selected in a nationwide architectural competition. The winner was the Roark Studio studio from Gdansk. The idea is based on the principle of an atrial house, where the center of the premise is a green, lowered patio, separated from the outside world. Car traffic has been excluded, 20,000 plants have been planted, the estate has electric car chargers, photovoltaic panels, rain gardens, soil moisture sensors and an automatic plant watering system that uses rainwater.

- We use advanced simulation and analysis to help us understand how various factors affect the designed space. We analyze the impact of wind, thermal comfort and insolation, both of the spaces between buildings and the interiors of the apartments themselves. This allows us to design estates that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional and comfortable for residents," saysJakub Bladowski, CEO of Roark Studio.

Technologies in design

He adds that in researching the perception of space, the studio uses modern technologies such as eye-tracking and EEG to understand exactly how people perceive and react to the designed environment.

- These tools allow us to create spaces that are more tailored to users' needs and expectations, resulting in a better quality of life, Bladowski says.

Previously, Atrium Oliva won the Building of the Year 2023 competition, and was also awarded the European Property Awards 2022-2023 and BREEAM certification.

- Concern for the environment and development in the direction of sustainable construction is the only right direction for the entire construction industry, says Lukasz Herring, director of the Investment Preparation and Development Department at developer Allcon.
