"10 Questions to an Interior Designer" is a series of short talks inspired by the series "10 Questions to...". This time our attention is turned to interior architects. In today's episode, Zuzanna Motus talks about her approach to design.
Zuzanna Motus — interior designer, founder of the author's studio LOQM Zuzanna Motus Architektura Wnętrz. Her designs have been awarded and published in the Polish press. Her studio offers a comprehensive design service from work on the concept, to technical documentation and supervision of implementation, supply of materials along with provision of execution teams and commissioning of the investment. She holds a teaching position at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk.
1. For me, home is...
Everything. A place where I can feel safe literally and figuratively. It's the shared conversations over morning coffee and walks with my dog on dirt roads. It's where I feel the most peace and can spend free time with my family to reset my head from intense creative work.
2. The key to a successful interior design is...
Dialogue, communication with the developer and a detailed analysis of his needs. A clear and transparent design process for the client.
3. I look for inspiration in...
In places that seem interesting to me because of their context or timeless character. This can be a newly created public place located in the fabric of urban bustle, as well as a private interior at a friend's place in the Mazury. Such, often accidentally encountered situations, seem to me the most valuable and unique.
4. In cooperation with an investor the most important thing is...
Empathy, trust and mutual understanding at all stages of the project.
5. My favorite design style is...
Timeless, solid minimalism. I do not advocate locking a project into one stylistic frame. I believe that the project should serve the investor, who has individual needs. Also those related to aesthetics. The project should fully respond to them and be up to date for many years. We are pleased when someone wants to cooperate with us because of our previously completed projects that respond to such needs.
6. The most valuable item in my home is...
A lamp made by my dad. It always changes its location with me. It proves that the simplest solutions are the most valuable.
7. The most common mistake made by people who decorate their apartment on their own is...
Lack of balance between needs and visual aspects.
8. My favorite material is...
Veneer. A material that makes the interior more individual and noble in perception.
9. Trend that I would like to see pass away already is...
Copying trendy interiors and applying them by force to your space. Any ill-considered procedure that embeds a project in a given time is my personal concern about its reception in a few years. There are plenty of completed projects that look like a temporary delight. A good design is timeless.
10. Someday, I would like to live in...
A house surrounded by nature in the literal sense of the word.
