Types of tiles - how to choose the best for our home?

23 of February '22

Already known before our era, they were used to decorate temples and palaces in the Persian Empire or the Tigris-Euphrates valley. Since then, their method of production and even their properties have changed. We may be surprised how many types of tiles are now present on the market. Usually thin, square or rectangular pieces take on a variety of forms and colors, being an uncommon decoration in interiors.

Different tiles for different purposes

Tiles are undoubtedly one of the most practical floor finishes. They have a longer lifespan than other types of flooring, require no additional professional maintenance and are ideal for underfloor heating. As a result, floor tiles are no longer limited to "wet areas" such as bathrooms. People are integrating these finishes into most other rooms in their homes.
However, there are significant differences between them, which should be kept in mind before purchasing. If you want to lay tiles on the floor, make sure you don't buy tiles that are suitable for laying on the walls. It is important to realize a few main features that distinguish floor tiles from wall tiles. Unlike extremely smooth wall tiles, floor tiles are not supposed to be completely smooth in order to maintain an adequate level of friction when walking. Likewise, floor tiles typically have a water absorption capacity of 3%-significantly lower than that of wall tiles, which can be as high as 10%.
Delving further into the subject, we discover that there are many different types of tiles manufactured from different materials. Each of these types has characteristics to serve the nature of use, style, size and available space for laying them. Here is a list of the most popular types of tile:

Ceramic tiles

Ceramic t ile is made from clay and other natural materials fired in a kiln. It is durable and works well in virtually any room in the house. These types of tiles come in an amazing variety of colors and patterns. They are often used as floor tiles, as well as shower tiles.
Tiles that imitate wooden panels are also made of ceramic material. Combining the natural beauty of wood with the durability of tiles, the imitation wood style is a strong trend in the flooring industry. More durable and water-resistant than hardwood, imitation wood offers unlimited design possibilities and isfree from the dangers of woodworm. We also don't have to maintain and care for it like we do for solid wood flooring.

Stoneware

Porcelain stonewaretiles are produced from denser clay and processed at much higher temperatures than non-porcelain ceramic tiles. The resulting material is thus much more durable and resistant to damage. Unlike standard ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles can be used outdoors due to their negligible porosity and better resistance to frost and extreme temperatures.

Mosaics

Beautiful motifs arranged from small pieces are often seen in bathrooms and kitchens, but are certainly suitable for any room in the house. Mosaics are usually made from pieces of glass in different colors and arranged in various patterns. It is also common to mix the materials they are made of to make them look even more attractive. The gap between the pieces is filled with mortar or cement.

The material is available in a variety of colors and features an interesting texture. The dimples and rough texture are created by air bubbles. The stylish surface of travertine tiles illuminates the interior and gives it a natural look. As an environmentally friendly material, travertine is 100% biodegradable.
