Granite or stainless steel - how to choose the right sink?

Choosing and buying a sink is no longer simple. Mounting under or from above? Double or single? Drainer or no drainer? Granite or stainless steel? With so many options available, it can be stressful and confusing. We'll walk you through the pros and cons of both stainless steel and granite sinks, hoping to make your decision a little easier!

Stainless steel

Stainless steel sinks have been popular for years. This material is widely used especially in the restaurant industry due to its exceptional durability, resistance to various substances or high temperatures, impact and abrasion.

Technological and design developments have meant that today we have a huge variety in terms of style and configuration options. In short, stainless steel is no longer boring, it can be beautiful. This material will also blend well with other chrome and stainless steel kitchen appliances, such as ovens, dishwashers and refrigerators, creating a cohesive look throughout the space.

Steel is sometimes polished to a high gloss or matte, or satin finish. A texture resembling fabric is also popular . In addition to the interesting visual effect, its advantage is that it does not show stains. What's more, stainless steel is 100% recyclable, so you know you're also contributing to the environment!

One example is the 48 x 48 cm single-bowl, smooth, flush-mounted model. It has a side overflow and siphon included. The designer placed this particular sink in an arrangement with an island in a kitchen decorated in an industrial style: with brick in various shades of beige and brown on one of the walls, with steel workshop-style lower cabinets. The steel sink is accompanied by a Fiesta stand mixer tap.

Disadvantages of stainless steel sinks can be their tendency to scratch and age over the years. For some people, the noise generated when dropping cutlery or pans into a stainless steel sink can be a real nuisance. To ensure adequate sound attenuation, make sure the sink is coated with a primer. Also pay attention to the thickness of the steel, as this is a good indicator of quality and durability. The thinner the steel, the more likely it is to be damaged or dented.

Granite

A granite sink usually consists of about 80% granite and 20% acrylic resin, which provides durability that is hard to match! Choosing granite also means you're getting a sink that's scratch-, stain- and heat-resistant, which means fewer worries when you're running wild in the kitchen. In addition, depending on the brand, there are a variety of colors to choose from that will fit into most arrangements.

An example of a sink made of granite is the Mezzo II from the dark arrangement. This is a single-bowl model that has a rectangular form of 58 x 48 cm. It comes with an automatic stopper controlled by a knob, as well as a siphon with the possibility of connecting a dishwasher or washing machine. The manufacturer gives as much as a 15-year warranty on the sink.

Some will opt for a sink with a drainer, such as the Mezzo II measuring 78 x 48 cm. Importantly, this is the so-called reversible model, that is, it allows you to change the position of the bowl and the draining board. The collection includes models with two bowls - of the same or different sizes.

Compared to stainless steel sinks, granite has more limitations when it comes to configurations, but there is still a lot of choice. If you live in an area where the water is "hard," owners of dark granite sinks have found that scale buildup can leave a white residue on the sink, but this can be avoided by always rinsing and drying the sink after use. To keep your granite sink looking great, you'll need to follow a few care rules, but it's well worth the effort.

In conclusion, both types of sinks offer great durability and functionality, so it really all comes down to the style that suits you. Consider which sink will work best with the style of your kitchen countertops, cabinets, fixtures and appliances. So, as long as you buy a quality sink, you'll be sure that it will stand the test of time!
