Family apartment inspired by the Baltic Sea

15 of November '22

The authors of the interiors of the seaside apartment, Diana and Lukasz Michalski of the Soul Interiors studio, took many colors, patterns, visual effects and textures from the Baltic Sea. They introduced maritime inspirations in unobvious forms here by means of lamps, furniture and accessories, among other things.

Between the sea and the forest

The work on the apartment in Swinoujscie Diana and Lukasz Michalski recall today all the more pleasantly, as the two investors placed a really high level of trust in them. The owners were busy with professional and personal matters in Berlin and came to Swinoujscie only after the work was completed. The remote cooperation formula worked out perfectly. The location of this Baltic resort, by the way, also generated some challenges on the part of the architects. On the other hand - visits to the construction site had something of recreation in them, too.

- In the absence of investors on site, all logistics fell to our studio. However, it was also a very valuable experience for us. On the other hand, since we work in the capital on a daily basis, and we carry out projects mainly in Warsaw and Berlin, we do not often have the opportunity to carry out renovations by the sea or in the mountains. And here, besides the sea, an extremely pleasant part of the landscape is also a fragrant pine forest," emphasizes Lukasz Michalski.

When less is more

The two-story apartment is now 70 sqm. The lower level consists of an entrance area, a toilet and a living room with a dining room and kitchenette. An extension of the living space is a terrace located right next to a pine forest. An optically light, white staircase leads to the upper level, where, in turn, there was a spacious host bedroom with sea views, a children's room and a bathroom. Not only the design of the rooms, but also the current functional layout is the work of Diana and Lukasz Michalski of Soul Interiors studio.

-Originally there was a two-story living room with amezzanine. It tookus a long time to consider with the investors whether to leave this space in its original shape or divide it. In retrospect, the introduction of the ceiling turned out to be a very correct decision," emphasizes Lukasz Michalski.

- The apartment has obviously gained in terms of square footage, but not only. Direct access to the large glass window in the newly created bedroom also turned out to be a great value. Above the tops of the trees, it offers a view of the Baltic Sea and the illuminated ships running at night. Such a perspective seen before bed inspires dreams of more travels," adds Diana Michalska.

All the colors of the sea

The interior of the Swinoujscie apartment attracts attention with a rich, but perfectly balanced and harmonious color palette. These are mainly blues and greens in various shades.

- From the beginning, the owners placed great emphasis on this issue. Since this is a family apartment for a seaside vacation, they asked that the interiors be kept in a nautical aesthetic. The investors are young entrepreneurs from the new technology, IT and finance industries. They live in cosmopolitan Berlin on a daily basis. Both the nature of their work and the atmosphere of this city undoubtedly influenced the couple's color boldness. Hence the dominance of turquoise and navy blue in the interiors, broken by stronger accents of maroon, amber and golden brass," Diana Michalska mentions.

Seaside inspirations

With the right amount of sensitivity and imagination, however, nautical inspirations can be read not only in the colors of the apartment. The rounded shapes, as if smoothed by sea waves, have something of the famous modernism of Gdynia - "a city of sea and dreams." The planking on the floor echoes a wooden deck or pier. The stair balustrade brings to mind the rigging of sailing ships. The rhythmic fluting of the fronts of many of the furniture pieces and the tiles on the wall in one of the bathrooms resemble tiny waves on the water on a windless day. In turn, the watercolor pattern of the custom-made wallpaper, which covers a two-story high wall near the staircase, is associated with a stormy sea. Unusual lamps, due to the richness of their shades and the structure of the glass, have a fascinating charm of amber viewed under the light. The aforementioned lamps, which, among other things, highlight the table in the living space and create the atmosphere of the master bedroom, say a lot about the aesthetic needs of the apartment's owners.

- As architects, we are extremely pleased that the investors not only gave us a free hand with many activities, but also allowed us to work creatively with original works of world design. They were interested in the highest quality, without saving money or looking for substitute products," emphasize Diana and Lukasz Michalski.
