New life of the hair shampoo bottles. Ukrainian project with International Design Awards

06 of April '23

The KOHTI chair by Ukrainian studio Levantin Design has been awarded at the International Design Awards. The furniture is a modern design in accordance with the principles of circular economy.

Levantin Design studio is a joint project of Sergei and Alexander Lvov. It began with experimenting with furniture restoration during their studies. In 2012, they created the Levantin Re-design Work studio, which over time evolved into Levantin Design, a multidisciplinary design studio that brings together passionate and independent artists. The KOHTI chair was awarded Silver in the Design for Society-Eco-Sustainable Design category at the International Design Awards.

The name of the KOHTI chair means "towards" in Finnish and refers to creating in the spirit of zero waste and circular management of materials. The designers know that new furniture must and will continue to be made, but they oppose overproduction and strive to use recycled materials in their designs. The chair features a sleek, minimalist backrest, which is made of powder-coated steel tubes. The backrest flows seamlessly into the armrests.

Instead, black and white HDPE polyethylene shampoo bottles were used for the seat. This material worked well not only because of its reusability, but also through its functional properties. It is safe, resistant to UV radiation, low temperatures or the effects of water and acids.
