A roof in a classic style? Opt for a clay tile

09 of September '22

Choosing a roofing material is an extremely important part of building a house. Ceramic tiles provide durability and good looks for years.

How are ceramic tiles made?

Tiles are created using only natural materials. This makes them ideal for anyone who values an eco-friendly lifestyle. They owe their high quality primarily to pure, natural clay. It is used to create a mixture with a bit of marl. Various refining ingredients are sometimes added. Tiles are then formed using water. These are then dried and fired in a special kiln. Due to the fact that the tiles are fired at a very high temperature, they become extremely resistant to external factors. The tiles can then undergo processes that impart specific properties. Appropriate minerals, metal oxides or glaze particles are then added. Engobed products are very durable and at the same time vapor-permeable. Glazed tiles, on the other hand, have a glossy layer of glaze on the surface. This gives ceramics a tight, uniform, resistant and pore-closing layer. In the production process, no lime, cement or artificial additives are added, which makes the product completely ecological. They do not have any adverse effects on the health of residents. Moreover, even when they are destined for disposal, they will not pose a threat to the environment.

Advantages of tiles

Tilesguarantee the durability of roofing. This material is extremely resistant to weather conditions. It is not frightened by frost, strong wind or the effects of sun and moisture. Ceramic tile is also resistant to fire. There is a reason why manufacturers offer 30 to 50 years of warranty. In addition, rainwater easily runs off the tiles. Thanks to the fact that nothing lingers on their surface, there is no danger of ice piles forming. Nor does moss or algae appear on their surface. As a result, the roof will look good for years. Another unquestionable advantage is that if already a few tiles are damaged, there is no need to replace the entire roofing. This definitely reduces the cost of the eventual repair. Traditional tile is also distinguished by high sound insulation. Lightweight roofing makes a loud rumbling sound in the attic when it rains or hails. In the case of a usable attic, this can be very disruptive. Ceramic tiles dampen such noises. They possess a certain timeless charm. So they will prove ideal for lovers of classics and in renovations of older buildings. However, nowadays not only these traditional tiles are available. We can choose among many modern forms and fashionable colors.

Types of tiles

There are several types of tiles to choose from. The extremely popular plain tile is distinguished by its characteristic shape. The lower part of the tile has a sharp, oval or straight end. It is flat and narrow. We can choose a plain tile with a flat or fluted finish. This type of tile is laid in a crown or scalloped pattern. The monk type of tile owes its name to being laid with two types of tiles. They have a trough shape. They are long and taper downward. The "dandelions" are laid first. They are installed so that the side edges face upward. They are laid directly on the battens. Tiles called "monks" are laid on top of them. Subsequent layers are separated by about 8 centimeters. They are installed with brackets or battens. These tiles are self-ventilating. Unfortunately, they are not among the cheapest. Another type is Dutch tiles, also known as S-shaped tiles. The name refers to their characteristic shape. This is because in cross-section they resemble the letter "S". Thanks to this, it can be laid in any spacing. Thus, it does not need to be trimmed. What's more, the holender allows for effective drainage and tight roofing. Slightly similar to it is the lap tile. It is characterized by the fact that at the top and bottom of the tile there are large contoured overlaps. These allow for easy laying. They also serve to seal the joints.
