First of all, we should pick out any defects in the structure of the furniture, such as scratches, chipping of varnish or paint. Let's also assess the structure of the furniture, whether we are sure we can renovate the whole thing ourselves.

The next step will be to remove superficial dirt. Both dust and greasy stains should be cleaned, for example with a solution of water and gray soap. This is especially important for the adhesion of paint layers. Keep in mind that rough wire washes can leave permanent scratches.

If the piece of furniture has wood-boring holes, it will be necessary to use pest control products. This is a very important step, the omission of which may risk introducing maggots into the house, which will make their way onto other wooden elements. Chemicals are highly poisonous, so deworming processes should be carried out in very well-ventilated rooms.

With sanding, the outer layer of paint, varnish or stain should be removed from the surface of the furniture. Here a sander or sandpaper works well. Scrape off the coating with one of coarse grit and finish with a fine grit, alby getting rid of small scratches.

Some coatings may need to be removed with chemicals. If this is the case, be very careful and perform the work according to the manufacturer's recommendations, necessarily shielding the hands and respiratory tract. It is important to adequately ventilate the room in which you are working.

Once the surface is cleaned, any cavities should be filled with several coats of wood filler in the appropriate shade, and after it dries, sand the part again. If we used wood glue, it's also a good idea to level these areas.

The next stage is painting. Both stain and chalk paint will work here, or less noble in appearance - oil paint. If you want the surface to be smooth, you can use a paint roller. It is best if we paint along the grain of the wood. With a brush then, we can help at the edges and in hard-to-reach places. After drying, sometimes it will be necessary to repeat the whole process.

Artistic embellishments, colorful patterns and leaks remain a matter of taste. Just remember that the layers applied should be as thin as possible so that no chipping occurs.

The last layer is usually a protective varnish or a more natural-looking wax, which will be an excellent finish for surfaces covered only with stain.
