Pellet stove - what do you need to know?

The energy crisis and problems with the availability of coal, make many people look for other ways to heat their homes. An interesting alternative is a pellet boiler.

What is pellet?

Pelletsis a fuel that is made by compressing wood waste such as sawdust, shavings and chips. It comes in the form of pellets. Pellets is an extremely efficient heating fuel. At the same time, a very small amount of tarry substances is emitted during its combustion. Pelletss are also non-toxic and have no explosive properties The ash content of this heating fuel is max. 1%. As a result, it is usually sufficient to remove the ash once 2-3 weeks during the heating season. The ash from pellets also has a composition that is beneficial to the soil, so it can be used as a fertilizer. This is why pellets are sometimes called green coal.

Pellets stove operation

A pellet stove is an excellent choice for people who do not want to spend a lot of time on heating service. Depending on the size of the storage tank, the stove can operate unattended for up to several weeks after a single fill. Modern pellet boilers have the ability to fire up and extinguish themselves. Some of them also clean themselves automatically. Some models can also be controlled remotely. A huge advantage is that pellet stoves with a feeder automatically adjust fuel combustion to changes in building demand. So, with the proper setting of the controller, we do not waste fuel for heating when the rooms are warm enough. If you opt for a pellet boiler, you need to consider the size of the boiler room. The minimum space must be 2 × 3 m and well ventilated. It is also necessary to check the section of the chimney, and the entire installation should be approved by a chimney sweep. It is also necessary to store the fuel properly, as pellets must not become soggy. Also avoid using industrial pellets, as they can damage the boiler.

What to follow when choosing a boiler?

You can choose between a single-function pellet stove that will power only the heating system or a stove with a hot water storage tank. It is also a good idea to opt for an automatic boiler, which will ensure safety, convenience and combustion efficiency. You can also choose, pellet stove and eco-pea stove. Any pellet stove should have the required certifications that prove its safety. Remember that when buying a pellet stove, bigger does not mean better. Pellets boilers achieve their greatest efficiency when operating at nominal power. Buying too large a boiler will result in higher fuel consumption and high heating costs. The power of the boiler should be selected according to the heat demand of the building. Such information can be found in the design of the building. They take into account not only the square meters of the house, but also the type of materials used or insulation. For every 10 square meters of a well-insulated house there should be 1 KW of power. If the stove is also to be used for heating water, this value should be increased accordingly.

Costs

Heating with pellets is an economical solution. This fuel material has a relatively low price. It is usually sold in bags of 10 or 20 kilograms, which also makes it very easy to transport and store. However, it is not worth saving on the choice of stove. The quality of the device determines the efficiency of combustion and the convenience of its use. Fortunately, due to the fact that pellets are an environmentally friendly fuel, you can get a subsidy for the purchase of a boiler. When buying a stove for a new home or eliminating an old inefficient solid fuel heat source, you can take advantage of a subsidy under the Clean Air program. The condition for reimbursement is the purchase of a class 5 boiler that meets certain technical requirements. It is also possible to take advantage of the thermal modernization tax credit.
