Storage of children's toys - a challenge for a parent

10 of August '22

Storing children's toys is no small challenge. Plush toys, puzzles, blocks of various kinds, games and balls are things that, when not stored, wander like living organisms all over the house. How do we store them so that we don't get lost in their multitude and at the same time don't lose your child's favorite items?

Play zone in the room

First of all, it's good if the child has his own room and this is where he can store all the useful toys and utensils. It would be advisable to designate a play zone there, so that it is different from the study area, for example. If it is a clearly marked corner, for example, with the help of wall colors or furniture that are different from the rest, the child has a clear idea of where the place of toys is and is more willing to accumulate them in this place.

In order for the child to be able to control the order himself, it is best that the storage places of objects are within his reach and do not provoke climbing on the cabinets. To be safe, it's a good idea to have all high and heavy shelves bolted to the walls. This will ensure a safe space for the child.

If we keep the place fairly systematically tidy, it will promote calm, non-chaotic play for the child. Also, the fewer the number of toys, the easier it will be to control them. So a system of rotating toys will work. We can take the ones that are not used at a given time to another room.

Shelves, cabinets and drawers

We can storelarger toys on open shelves. If they are low, they can simultaneously serve as play tables. Besides, taller book cases with fixed shelves, or drawers in the form of boxes or baskets, are perfect. Furniture with adjustable angle shelves works well. They take up a little less space, and at the same time are clear and therefore convenient to use.

Lockable cabinets, on the other hand, will keep items shielded from dust. If the door is not transparent, it will allow us to hide the multitude of items and keep the room tidy. Also, long and at the same time not high drawers on wheels, sliding under the bed, will be helpful in efficient and systematic ordering of the room.

Books into the trash...?

We can store books both on shelves, but also, especially those for younger children, in baskets. Children, being able to look into it and find their favorite story, will be encouraged to read at the same time.

Storage in open boxes

A great way to store toys is in fairly shallow, open containers. The child knows where specific items are, so he spends more time playing than searching for them. After playing, he can put them back away quite easily. It's not one big container for everything, but the places are clearly defined. It's also worth paying attention that the bottom of the container is not too concave inward. This will limit its capacity. It would also be good for the containers themselves not to be too heavy, while remaining stable.

Soft and flexible containers

If the bins are to be used by children, it is a good idea to anticipate that they will be dragged along the floor, flipped over and even inhabited by them. Baskets and boxes made of fabric, felt or seagrass will therefore work well. They are pleasant to the touch and extremely pompous.

Treasure chest

In stylish apartments, an old wooden trunk can stand in the children's room. It will add a touch of mystery to the space and bring to mind a treasure chest found on a distant island. It can also serve a similar purpose - storing the most valuable toys.

What to keep trinkets in?

We can gather trinkets in small boxes, preferably lockable. It's perfect if they are a bit stylized for children's tastes.
