Solar control glass in the modern home

01 of August '22

Designers are constantly looking for modern technical solutions that improve the efficiency and comfort of buildings. One of the increasingly popular materials is glass. Occurring in a large percentage in the façade, it can cause overheating. So it is worth thinking about the use of solar control glass.

Instead of air conditioning

Solar control glass is an ideal solution for modern buildings with large glazing. The use of traditional glazing here, can cause excessive heating of rooms. The sun's rays will also cause the colors of the furniture and walls inside the building to fade over time. On hot days, we may have to cool the rooms, which will increase our electricity bills. Glazing that blocks partial access to light can therefore become an excellent alternative solution.

Types of solar control glass

Sunscreen glassis capable of retaining up to 50-75% of the sun's energy, but some of it can also be slightly less durable than standard glass. Currently, we can choose from three types of such glass:

- absorptive, otherwise known as antisol. It is produced from float glass, tinted in the mass. Thanks to it, light transmission decreases to a level of 32-72% depending on the thickness and color of the glass. Transparent glass is available in shades of gray, brown, blue and green, which can, by the way, have a positive effect on the aesthetics of the interior. Such glass heats up strongly, absorbing some of the sun's energy and then dissipating it outside. It is used as an outer pane in a set of insulating glass units,

- reflective, called reflex or stopsol, has a thin coating of metal oxides or precious metals that, like a mirror, reflects some of the sun's energy. At the same time, it can be an additional protection of the house against thieves, who will have trouble looking through the windows into the house,

- selective - the glass has a blue tint, and Argon is present between the two panes, which reduces the penetration of sunlight and improves thermal insulation by about 20%.

The cost of solar control glass

Although solar control glass, in effect, reduces the fees associated with the installation and use of air conditioning, we must reckon with the cost of purchasing this type of window glass. It will cost us about 20-30% more than transparent glass. In summer, however, it will definitely improve the comfort of the room.
