How to choose the right color of grout?

15 of March '22

There are a lot of tasks to be done during a renovation. One of them is, of course, choosing tiles, and another is choosing the right grout. Even the most beautiful tiles may no longer look so spectacular if you don't consciously choose grout. It's not an easy task at all, and there are no hard and fast rules here either, but there are a few tips that will help us make a choice we won't regret.

What is grout

Grout is simply the joint between tiles that connects them together. It is used to fill in the gaps between tiles to smoothly align them. Grout also helps keep the tiles on the walls or floor and acts as a sealant, preventing water from getting in. In addition to its purely practical functions, grout is also a kind of decoration. We can play with the colors and widths between tiles to radically change the look of the entire arrangement.

Grout color

When choosing grout, the basic criterion is its color. It all depends on the final look of the tiles you are aiming for. A good way to start is to think about the three different looks you can achieve with grout - contrast, complement or conceal.

Contrast

If a tile pattern or color is too boring in our opinion, or we want to add some innovation to the arrangement, use contrasting grout. An example would be black colored grout between white tiles. Such a treatment will make the thin grout the key color accent of the wall.

Complement

Perhaps you have chosen great multicolored or patterned tiles for your interior? To complement such a color palette, the right grout is needed to highlight the entire establishment.

Camouflage

If we are not so bold, or if we want the tiles to blend seamlessly and look like one big piece, we can use grout that will blend in with the tiles, thus being almost invisible.

White grout - yes or no?

Even if we really love the color white, grout in this color can be a great choice, but definitely not on the floor. Several years after the renovation, it is definitely not as bright white as it used to be. So, if we want to be practical it is better to choose another color. White grout, on the other hand, can work well on the bathroom walls, it will give us a clean, fresh color scheme.
