Barn and art deco - an unusual combination

27 of April '22

How to combine references to art déco style, modernity and a barn-type house? This was the challenge taken up by Roland Stańczyk of RS Studio Projektowe. An interior design combining these elements was created in Warsaw's Wilanów district.

The interior designer was approached by investors who wanted to create a unique open space in their home.

I took on the challenge of realizing an interior on a huge scale so as not to overwhelm it, to keep its open form and lightness. The architecture in the style of a modern barn must harmonize with the interior solutions," says interior designer Roland Stańczyk.

maximum opening

In the living area, the most important feature was the opening to the large glass windows. The living room connects to the mezzanine, which creates a platform suspended in space. The slats surrounding the mezzanine were made of oak. The mezzanine relies on glazing.

The living area consisted of a high living room, a kitchen connected to the dining room and a private study. All these spaces, except for the study, which has been closed behind aluminum doors, intermingle with each other.

making one whole

The kitchen along with the dining room merge with the living room. Similar stylistic solutions appear here. The cabinetry is two-colored. The upper fronts are finished in white, in the lower fronts the dominant element is a dark oak color. Added to this is a delicate quartz sintered countertop in dark tones. This is the so-called "clean kitchen", as the investors also decided to have a "dirty kitchen". The second space is more practical, prepared for everyday use. In the middle of the kitchen they decided on a kitchen island in the color of the lower fronts.

Combining art déco with modernity

The interior of the living room centers around a modern gas fireplace. A geometric pattern of glass tiles was placed over the door and fireplace glass, which is associated at first glance with the Great Gatsby aesthetic. Attention is also drawn to the unique lamps maintained in similar styling.

On the first floor, bedrooms, a dressing room and a bath room were located. This is a more private space, but its styling is consistent with the aesthetics of the living area. Delicate gray is the king here, blended into the wooden built-in.
