Acapulco - probably that was the name of this model. This chair or armchair, it is difficult to judge. Its simple, openwork form makes this piece of furniture fit perfectly into both outdoor, garden and indoor arrangements, referring to the boho style, or, for example, vintage. It is a timeless design, which is one of the most recognizable functional forms of the 20th century.
An armchair with a form resembling an avocado fruit
The design of the frustrated tourist
This is a design hit of the 1950s. Undoubtedly, the form brings to mind an avocado fruit, which, if legend is to be trusted, may indeed have inspired the design. For, according to the story, the chair was constructed by a tourist who was a visitor to the Mexican city. The seats he had occasion to use did not suit his needs. They were heavy and not airy. He then decided to make a piece of furniture on his own that was lightweight and sturdy, yet weatherproof.
The design quickly gained popularity and filled seaside beaches and hotel terraces. Over time, it became a cult form, reproduced in various variations and with modern materials. It was an object of desire for Hollywood stars and the artistic community. It also quickly made its way into European design.
These armchairs can be constructed on legs or on poles
References of Polish designers
The name of the first author of the design is therefore unknown. However, we do know that Polish design was also rich in stylistically similar seats. We should mention here the name of Wladyslaw Wlodkowski and his designs of armchairs from the Bears set, made of wicker and metal, and veined stools. Also in a similar style is Witold Poplawski 's Shell Armchair from 1958.
The seat is usually made of rattan, technorattan, leather straps, or rope
Openwork design
In the case of the model known as Acapulco, the structure is a metal frame over which rattan, cord, leather strap, technorattan or PVC rope is stretched. The seat is flexible and stretches slightly under weight. Each chair is woven by hand.
This armchair will be an ideal piece of furniture for the garden, terrace, or balcony
Design icon
We undoubtedly associatethese chairs with summer and holiday freedom. They are ergonomic and comfortable, especially if you lined them with a soft bedspread. The veined armchair is an element that enlivens the interior design and adds lightness. Interestingly, due to the metal elements, this model also blends perfectly into a definite loft style.
