The original design of the round window

12 of August '22

Modern interiors surprise with unusual forms of windows. Usually these are non-standard sizes, sometimes shapes and even colors. Such solutions are a real decoration and attraction of the house. A very common choice among them is the round window.

This was a form already used in traditional architecture. Round windows were once designed in mansions and palaces, usually in the facades of buildings, which was to emphasize the symmetrical composition of the building. In townhouses such openings were used to emphasize bays, risalits or dormers. They were also often used in arcades and niches. Later they were also eagerly used in modernist construction, where symmetry was no longer so important. At that time they were located most often in traffic areas or small rooms, such as bathrooms.

Characteristics and types of round windows

Round windows give an original look to the architecture and emphasize its character. They have equally high insulating properties as traditional forms. There are several types of round windows. They are opened in a different way. Differences in the construction of the window affect, among other things, the amount of light transmitted. The most popular round windows are fixed, casement, tilt, split mullion, single-sash, or multi-sash or pivot.

Windows with a uniform plane

The cheapest of the options are fixed, fix-type windows with a uniform plane of glazing. Such a model will not be able to open. Thus, it is only an ornamental window, which could work best, for example, for installation in a wall between rooms.

More practical is the casement system, in which we can open the entire window as a single sash. Here the most popular are small porthole windows, which are reminiscent of skylights in the side of a ship. They will be a unique decoration of a nautical style house, or a sentimental detail in the home of a sea travel enthusiast.

Atilt window is a convenient solution, usually equipped with additional closers - a mechanism that does not allow it to slam shut during a strong draught.

In a pivot system, the sash can be opened both horizontally and vertically, after rotating the sash 180°. If the axis is set horizontally, the upper part of the sash opens inward and the lower part outward , which is important while there are raindrops on the window.

Split windows

Round windows with a division are usually opening versions. So in addition to a stylish appearance, we have the possibility to ventilate the room. They can have one, two or more flaps. Light penetration is somewhat limited due to the larger construction area. The window sash in these types opens inward.

Rosette windows

Rosettewindows have been known since the Middle Ages. They became established in single-family homes in the 20th century. The old rosette window was designed on a rose plan and filled with stained glass. The modern rosette is reduced to muntins. An ordinary room with such a window will turn into an artistic interior. It will be an excellent motif for industrial style and interiors decorated with architectural concrete.

Material of construction

Window frames can be wooden, and then they look especially beautiful. They are suitable for almost any interior. They will find themselves in both the old, classic and modern styles. A cheaper version are models made of MDF or particle board.

Plastic frames are the most popular option. If they are made of high-quality plastic, we can rest assured that their production is not dangerous to the environment. Here we also have a wide range of colors to choose from. These frames are also very easy to clean and at the same time quite durable.

Size and cost of a round window

Wood-framed windows are usually larger, but are unlikely to exceed 200 cm. Those made of PVC are usually up to 130 cm. Since such a window shape is not standard, they are usually made to order, so their cost is up to 200% of the price of a standard window.

Where to plan a round window?

We can install a round window anywhere on the facade. However, it is important to properly incorporate it there. Installed in the attic and loft, they will give a unique impression in their interior. They will also perfectly illuminate this space. Round windows on the first floor will not draw our attention as much as windows on the upper floors.
