Observing nature at the Raszyn Ponds. A project by SGGW students

28 of June '23

Maja Bogus and Patrycja Olech , students of landscape architecture at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW ), have proposed a new development of the Raszynski Ponds in Falenty near Warsaw. Their idea, which has as its main goal the protection of wildlife, is to combine the natural environment with a space for relaxation and recreation. A treat for bird lovers is an observatory hidden in dense vegetation.

The project was created as part of the Rural Landscape Design course under the direction of Dr. Beata Fortuna-Antoszkiewicz, Dr. Jan Lukaszkiewicz and Jakub Botwina. The challenge was to create a unique landscape around the Falencki ponds, along with the inclusion of infrastructural elements that will enable the observation of flora and fauna and the creation of places for recreation.

We based our concept for the development of the Raszynski Ponds in Falenty on a harmonious combination of the natural environment, protection of wildlife and the creation of recreational and relaxation space for visitors. The most important goal of our concept is to protect the natural environment of the Raszynski Ponds due to the fact of the deepening climate crisis, the effects of which are irreversible and also noticeable. We designed places to immerse in nature and experience tranquility and beauty with the help of ornithological observatories and viewpoints ," the authors explained.

The students also proposed recreational infrastructure that will allow visitors to enjoy the ponds and their surroundings. These include walking paths, a campground including an orchard, picnic areas, an aquatic center, or fishing spots. The authors tried to integrate the infrastructure into the landscape so as not to disturb it.

wildlife observatory

One of the largest facilities is the observatory, which has been located in the mid-field woodland in close proximity to the ponds. The building is a structure that harmonizes with its surroundings, made of natural materials—wood and stone. Large windows open up the view of the ponds and allow bird watching.

In this magical place, nature comes alive in its full splendor. Birds of various species hover over the ponds, magnificently displaying their colorful plumage and creating spectacular aerial dances. Observers have the opportunity to get close to them and learn about their behavior in their natural environment. The observatory is an ideal place for nature lovers, nature photographers and anyone who wants to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of wild life, the students argue.

circular pier

On one of the ponds, the students proposed a gently shaped circular platform. It is made of wood of natural shade, which fits in with the surroundings.

The bridge symbolizes the endless cycle of life and mutual connection. The whole scenery aroundemanifests peace and tranquility, which is conducive to meditation, contemplation or simply relaxation. It's the perfect place to get away from the stress and rush of everyday life, allow yourself a moment of respite and enjoy the beauty of nature, the authors add.
