Vitruvius' treatise at the Museum of Architecture

28 of January '20

The Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw is launching a new series of events - "Wietrzenie Magazynów", i.e. monthly meetings during which the most valuable and interesting objects from the museum's collection will be presented. As the organizers assure, there is plenty to choose from, as the collection numbers as many as 524,000 754 objects!

In addition to medieval stone architectural details, the collection of the Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw also includes handicrafts (including stained glass, stoves, architectural ceramics and ceilings), wooden sculpture, a rich collection of graphics from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, architectural designs, photographs, works of contemporary art, industrial design products and models. On a daily basis, most of them are kept in museum warehouses and inaccessible to the public.

The first of the exhibits on display will be Vitruvius' famous treatise "On Architecture of Books Ten," which is still an invaluable source of knowledge about the construction of the ancient Greeks and Romans. This copy was published in 1548 in Nuremberg, at the publishing site of Johann Petreius, and is the first German translation (by Walther Hermann Ryff) of the treatise.
