The project to revitalize the area of the former Lublin Tobacco Works, developed by Chiara Solbiati, Bartosz Michałowski, Blanka Łomnicka and Jan Ciepły from the Faculty of Architecture at the Wrocław University of Technology, was awarded in the national student competition "New Tobacco". The competition task was to develop a concept for the modern revitalization of post-industrial areas, combining the industrial history of the place with the needs of modern users and users. The awarded project focuses on the creation of a business and cultural space, incorporating ecological solutions, functional diversity and inclusivity.

A modern space in the heart of Lublin

The aim of the project was to revitalize the post-factory area, integrating it into the surrounding urban fabric and adapting it to the needs of residents and future users. Particularly important is that the project is part of the city's development strategy as European Capital of Culture 2029.

The designers proposed modern solutions that combine recreational, gastronomic, cultural and residential functions. It was also important to organize the area to give it a clear, coherent spatial layout.

respect for industrial heritage

The revitalization assumes a harmonious connection between the post-factory areas and the surrounding urban space. Through the use of plazas, common spaces and greenery, the project promotes social activity and relaxation, while taking care to preserve the privacy of the residents.

The former fermentation plant and warehouse buildings have been converted into apartments, a hotel, offices, retail and dining establishments. The facades have been restored with attention to the industrial character of the place, which emphasizes the historic qualities of the architecture. The use of materials such as bricks and clay pavers introduces subtle touches that allude to the past.

modern form of adaptation

One of the most distinctive elements of the project is the use of recycled modular containers. They were used as food outlets, play zones, toilets or spaces for art. This type of solution allows flexible adaptation of the function of the space to the current needs, while at the same time it is in keeping with the post-industrial aesthetic, which perfectly harmonizes with the character of the place.

colorful path as a symbol of cohesion

The centerpiece of the project is a colorful path that leads users through the various zones of the space. In the woonerf it takes the form of a 3.5-meter-long pedestrian and bicycle path, while in the park it turns into an organic, narrow trail. The path emphasizes the traffic continuity of the entire establishment, and its connection to existing traffic routes facilitates integration with the surroundings.

quiet and active zones

The project is divided into two main zones - park and woonerf. The park zone is dominated by contemplative and relaxing zones, conducive to rest and contact with nature and art. The woonerf, on the other hand, is a place of social activity , where events, exhibitions and food gardens are planned. Such functional diversity makes the space friendly to both residents and visitors.

The revitalization project emphasizes the importance of ecological solutions. Rain gardens and water retention systems have been introduced, and the materials used in the implementation, such as containers and trill, are recycled. New plantings, climbing plants on the facades and shade elements increase biodiversity, improve the microclimate and enhance the aesthetics of the space.

An important element of the project was to design a space that is inclusive and free of architectural barriers. Wide paths were introduced, eliminating high curbs and steep driveways. On the slope connecting the different levels of the establishment, a staircase integrated with a ramp was built, which provides free access for people with limited mobility.

coherence and future of the space

The project took care of the coherence of the spatial assumptions, integrating greenery elements, modular containers and a colorful path. Catering, workshops and common spaces reinforce functional links between different parts of the area. The project not only revitalizes the New Tobacco area, but also gives it new life as a multifunctional, ecological urban space that can serve both the local community and visitors.
