award: Franciscan Friars Monastery
project: Paweł Lisiak
investor: Order of Friars Minor Conventual

The jury appreciated the multifaceted and multifaceted idea of using the existing ruins of the torpedo factory for a monastery, which will not only be a place of prayer, but also in this location will become an interesting proposal for solving the problem of water pollution. Transforming plastic trash fished from the sea by the Franciscan Fathers into a building product from which the walls of the monastery are built, and giving the excess away to the poor, is an example of sustainable thinking about both humans and the ecosystem as a whole [...]. The jury also noted the thorough analysis of the facility's self-sufficiency in terms of energy, thanks to the use of the site's location. The ability of the monks to produce food in the greenhouses and garden, and the use of natural fertilizers (of which the cormorants are a source here) is an example of living and functioning in harmony with nature. The symbolic transformation of a weapons production site into a space for prayer and recollection carries excellent ideas for the modern world. - Ewelina Jaskulska

winner: Home for the Homeless in Jankowice
design: XY studio
investor: Bread of Life Community Homes Foundation

The home for the homeless in Jankowice was built surrounded by open green areas, so it was important to design a building that would correspond harmoniously with the landscape. This goal has been achieved, both the simple, single-story body of the building and the elevation materials used blend in with the natural landscape of the area. The building was constructed with respect for the elements of nature, and recycled materials such as demolition bricks and planks were used for the facade. In an effort to be environmentally friendly, care was taken to ensure that other materials were also given a second life on the completed project. The building was designed to be energy-efficient, the body of the building with an inner courtyard promotes heat accumulation and is well lit by natural light. Among other things, the investment included an ecological wastewater treatment plant, rainwater tanks for watering the grounds, and ventilation with recuperation by sections and with local control. The facility in Jankowice is an example of socially responsible architecture, where, despite a limited budget and the requirement for low operating costs, a house was built where man and the environment were key in the search for design solutions, Alicja Leszczynska.
