These days, everyone knows or has heard of someone who is struggling with oncological diseases. Due to their specifics and hospital realities in Poland, the importance and need for designing medical spaces is growing. Oncology wards require special attention of designers, because the physical environment can affect the mental state and health of patients, moreover, it can have a significant impact on the comfort, emotional state and course of treatment of the subjects.

The aim of the project was to implement innovative technologies and solutions in selected spaces of the oncology department in a newly built hospital facility - the Lower Silesian Oncology Center (DCO). The project aims to increase the comfort, satisfaction and efficiency of treatment of oncology patients. The use of a psychological approach is crucial, as it can significantly improve the well-being and overall health of patients as they battle the disease. The project raises the standards of medical care and puts the patient's health first. The unique approach to the design of specialized spaces is crucial to creating an atmosphere conducive to health and recovery. It also inspires changes in the approach to the design of medical spaces, placing the greatest emphasis on psychosocial factors. The thesis focuses on selected areas of the oncology department at DCO, including the patient's room - the isolation room, the sanitary space, the chemotherapy and radiation therapy rooms, and the lobby with the reception and waiting area.

The use of a variety of backlighting, graphics and painting in hospital interiors stimulates patients' senses, acting as distractions from ailments and supporting the treatment process. The number of visual stimuli in patients is increased, which has a positive effect on their artistic sensitivity and visual perception, helping them take their minds off depression and illness. These artistic touches create an atmosphere reminiscent of a theater setting, which helps patients forget the hospital environment and makes them feel more comfortable and relaxed. Hospitals that incorporate such elements into their interiors often notice faster recovery and an improvement in their overall well-being.

The radiation therapy room was designed with patient comfort and safety in mind, and is equipped with an advanced Elekta gas pedal and futuristic lighting and an LED screen with a picturesque landscape. Isolation rooms provide privacy and comfort with warm wood tones, modern surfaces and touchless devices. The chemotherapy room exudes modern style and a soothing atmosphere with individual patient stations equipped with armchairs, refrigerators with cooling compresses and headphones. The lobby with reception and waiting area is spacious, modernly decorated and adapted for people with disabilities, providing a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment for cancer patients and their families.

Introducing art and a variety of visual stimuli into hospital interiors brings many positive results. It positively influences patients' emotions and mental health, supports their healing process, and creates a friendly working environment for medical staff. As a result, hospitals become places that offer not only treatment, but also inspiration and comfort, which is extremely important during difficult moments related to illness.
