Poznan harmony mill. A concept for revitalizing the deteriorating Hermanek.

27 of September '24

A {tag:studenci} from the University of Arts proposed a yoga center in the Hermanka Mill, a historic complex of buildings in the industrial area of the Wilda district of Poznań, which has been falling into disrepair for years. The author was inspired by asanas and the five elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether. These natural forces are not only key in the practice of yoga, but also determine the aesthetics and functionality of the designed object .

Hermanka mill - what's next for the historic building?

The Hermanka Mill is a complex of historic brick buildings that was erected in 1895 on the initiative of Poznan industrialists Rotholz and Lewin. Its architecture, based on red brick, features neo-Gothic elements typical of the era, making it one of the most important industrial buildings in Poznan. The complex of mill buildings includes the main mill room, engine room, boiler room and granary.

After World War II, the Hermanka Mill quickly resumed operations, becoming one of the first enterprises in Poznan. In 2003, part of the mill's facilities caught fire, causing significant losses. The granary part was preserved. In 2005, the Department of Urban Planning and Architecture issued a permit to demolish part of the buildings, in place of which stood a supermarket chain Lidl.

Since then, the remaining part of the complex has been waiting to be developed, falling into increasing disrepair, and its restoration has become an important topic among the local community. In 2022, the mill changed hands again. It is owned by a private individual, who has so far failed to come up with a concept for developing the site.

space for body and mind

A student at the University of Arts proposed her concept for the revitalization of the facility, focusing on the harmonious combination of space and nature. The inspiration of the elements was reflected in every detail of the center. Earth symbolizes stability, water - fluidity, fire - energy, air - lightness, and ether - spirituality. The Yoga Center is a space that allows participants and users to deeply immerse themselves in the practice, fostering their personal growth and spiritual renewal.

The interior is divided into two main zones: common and private. A practice room is located in the common area, allowing for comfortable classes for small groups of up to six people. Its concept is based on the motifs of fire and water, creating an unusual atmosphere. The play of light and shadow, combined with thoughtful architecture, allows participants to fully feel the energy of the space. Adjustable lighting affects the senses, supporting the process of relaxation and meditation. Locker rooms, with separate toilets and showers, provide comfort, while a kitchenette promotes integration between male and female participants.

The private area includes rooms, combining the function of bedrooms with an exercise space. Thanks to a flexible layout with folding beds, the rooms can be transformed into private rooms for yoga and meditation. The muted interiors, soft flooring and muted colors promote concentration, while subtle lighting creates the ideal conditions for relaxation. The space designed in this way allows for full immersion in the practice, fostering the achievement of inner balance.

The entire Yoga Center was designed using natural materials. The minimalist style ensures that the space does not overwhelm, while promoting tranquility and concentration. Dynamic lighting in the communication area alludes to the lightness of the air, while creating a modern and pleasant atmosphere.

The Yoga Center at the Hermanka Mill is more than just a place to exercise - it is an oasis of tranquility designed to support both group and individual yoga and meditation practice. Anna Maria Skotarek has created a space that combines elements of history, nature and modernity. Herman's Mill could become a space not only for yoga practice, but also for cultural events, workshops and meetings, integrating the local community.
