Milanowek anew. Central Square as the heart of the garden city

31 of December '24

From the Faculty of Interior Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, {tag:studenci} created a diploma project in response to the lack of public space in her hometown-garden city, Milanowek. In her thesis, whose supervisor was Dr. Iwona Kalenik , the architect designed the Central Square, a new social center that fills a gap in the city's urban planning. The project combines recreational and social functions, creating a place for meetings, relaxation and cultural events, enriching the offer of urban activities.

garden city concept

Milanówek, which is part of the "garden-town", exhibits unique landscape qualities and spatial structure. The author of the project, analyzing the history of the city, was inspired by the 19th-century concept of a garden city, created by Ebenezer Howard, which assumed a central park as the heart of the city. Ziarkowska decided to transfer these principles to Milanowek, creating a space that would respond to the needs of residents and visitors, while at the same time maintaining respect for the tradition of the garden city.

analysis of the geometry of the city space and its influence on the project

An important element of the project was the analysis of the spatial layout of Milanowek. Barbara Ziarkowska recognized the geometric connections between the street system, including the axial and radial routes that dominate the city's structure. The plot of land between Warszawska Street and the railroad tracks, which is the center of the project, is to become the new center of Milanowek, highlighting the unique spatial layout. The goal was to create a square that would take advantage of this geometric skeleton of the city, creating a central space with an integrative and recreational function.

sustainable development of social space

The central square in Milanowek is to serve as a social space. It has been planned as a place for meetings, events and recreation surrounded by nature. The project takes into account the continuation of the urban space by expanding the northern frontage of Warszawska Street and using the idea of the "Cristal Palace" as a modern accent in the space. The goal was to create a central park that would enrich the city's recreational and social offer, while maintaining harmony with its natural landscape.

A project integrating the city with nature

The design of Central Square in Milanowek by Barbara Ziarkowska is an example of a space that combines social and ecological functions, creating a community center within a garden city. The use of geometric garden city principles, connection to nature and social functions are key elements of this concept, which aims to enrich the lives of Milanowek residents and attract new visitors. The project not only responds to the spatial needs of the city, but also preserves its historical character by introducing modern urban planning solutions.
