On December 17 this year, during a remote press conference, we got to know the results of the implementation competition for the development of a concept for an energy-efficient kindergarten with land development in Michalowice, organized by the Warsaw Branch of the Association of Polish Architects and the Piaseczno Municipality.
The purpose of the competition was to select the best concept(s) for the development of full design documentation along with author's supervision enabling the implementation of the investment. The competition for the concept of the kindergarten in Michalowice is the first stage of the investment, which will result in the construction - after the completion of the kindergarten in Reguly - of the second of the planned modern and energy-efficient kindergartens.
The competition received 56 works. The competition court, consisting of: Maria Saloni-Sadowska (Chairperson), Dominik Górecki (Referee), Piotr Jurkiewicz (Assistant Referee with voting rights, expert on energy efficiency of buildings), Małgorzata Pachecka (Head of the Municipality of Michałowice), Dorota Bagińska (OW SARP), Renata Bontron (Director of the kindergarten inMichalowice), Jaroslaw Sobol, Tomasz Lozinski and Rafal Mroczkowski as Secretary deliberated remotely and stationary from December 5 to 16 this year. The results were officially announced on December 17 this year at a press conference at the Piaseczno Municipality Office.
awards
Due to the rather even level of the submitted works and the errors in them (which can be corrected in further stages of design), the jury unanimously decided not to award the first prize. Instead, it was decided to award two equal second prizes and a third prize. In addition, three works were awarded equal honorable mentions, and two works were awarded honorable mentions.
The two works awarded with the 2nd prize money and an invitation to negotiate in the mode of negotiations without an announcement give the Municipality of Michalowice a chance to meet the assumptions and objectives of the competition, but require the introduction of details in accordance with the recommendations of the Competition Jury [...]. The Competition Jury hopes that as a result of the competition and the negotiations conducted, an original and functional project will be realized, bringing new values to the space of the Michalowice Housing Estate and serving its residents well.

As the jury opinion reads:
The designed building is economical in its means of expression, which have been consistently used on the outside, as well as in the interiors of the building. It is characterized by universal simplicity and clarity of ideas adequate to its function and location. The functional layout of the building was designed in a very clear manner. Particularly noteworthy is the location of all the children's rooms on the first floor. These rooms have been equally illuminated with natural light. [...] The location of the building on the plot is apt urban planning. The interesting and varied recreational program along with the division into age groups proposed in the kindergarten garden was appreciated. Of the solutions affecting energy efficiency, the compact body, thoughtful placement of windows and reduction of the number of potential thermal bridges should be emphasized [...].
Another 2nd equal prize was awarded to the team composed of: Alicja Rudowska, Pamela Krzyszczak, Martyna Dyś.

The designed building is characterized by a delicate, light and unobtrusive architecture, which very aptly fits into the context of the location. High marks were given to the main functional dispositions and the character of the interiors with a spacious, welcoming central hall. The recreation and gymnasium, as well as the dining room, have been separated in the form of a group of rooms on the first floor, which allows them to be conveniently used as part of the kindergarten program, as well as outside of its working hours by the local community. The facility's evacuation solutions and detailed functional solutions need to be refined and detailed. The location of the facility on the kindergarten's plot has been carefully considered, and the access to the building, the entrance plaza on the public area and the connections with the surrounding areas will create a well-functioning spatial layout. The interesting and diverse recreational and educational program proposed in the kindergarten's surroundings was appreciated. In terms of energy efficiency solutions, the proposal to use a wooden structure was appreciated, as well as the well-thought-out proposal for natural ventilation by opening windows and skylights in the hall as supporting mechanical ventilation with highly efficient energy recovery [...].
3rd prize
The3rd prize of PLN 18,000 and a special mention for climate-neutral solutions went to the WXCA studio with a design team consisting of: Szczepan Wroński, Michał Starzyński, Edyta Filipczak.

The work is characterized by an interesting architectural expression and special values of sustainable design. The shape of the building was broken, creating a composition of two masses, covered by planes of plunging roofs. The decision to break the mass and to orient the wing housing the children's rooms directly to the south positively influenced the expression of the building's mass, while at the same time hindering the design of a clear vertical communication system. In addition, the court's doubts were raised by some functional decisions that do not fully meet the requirements of the future user. The original facades of the building deserve mention, giving the building a user- and environment-friendly expression. With the help of fine scale, the selection of natural materials and the exposure of structural elements, a natural and modern in perception object was created. The design responds most fully - in a bold, thoughtful and consistent way - to the challenges of climate change. No basement, wood construction with hemp concrete infill and a room layout that maximizes solar gains during the heating season and reduces the threat of overheating in the summer, the use of construction materials as finishes are just some of the elements of the strategy to reduce the carbon footprint. The use of natural materials that are free of volatile organic compounds ensures a healthy climate in the nursery's rooms. A great advantage of the project is also its educational layer - both in the building and in the development of the garden. The beautiful drawing of the facade with the display of the nature of the material - layers of rammed hemp concrete - was appreciated.

Michał Bamberski and Tomasz Sęczek for:
Solutions of internal space with integrative halls organized around a courtyard. Honorable mention was awarded to the JASTAA studio from Wroclaw. The author team consisted of Adam Stafiniak, Jacek Młynarczyk, Tomasz Węgrzyn, Zuzanna Róg . The project was awarded for:
An interesting attempt to optically reduce the mass of the building, by placing part of the functions on the underground floor uncovered by the shape of the terrain and lit by a "green moat". In this way, the building gained a second ground floor, in which a complex of recreational rooms and a dining room with facilities were placed, allowing their independent functioning. The building's light pavilion-like architecture was appreciated.
