Who will win the Mies van der Rohe award? We remind you of the finalists!

24 of April '24

This year's winner of the Mies van der Rohe Award will be announced on April 25, 2024. Five realizations from all over Europe have qualified for the finals, and PLATO designed by Robert Konieczny is competing for the prize. We present an overview of all the realizations qualified as finalists.

For years, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation has been awarding the prize to contemporary realizations, recognizing the best architectural practices, timeless values and ideas relevant to 21st century architecture. In January, the chapter published a shortlist for the competition, which selected 40 architectural realizations nominated for the award. At the time, Dobrawa Bies wrote about the realizations from Poland and Polish architects. Five buildings and two realizations of promising studios qualified for the finals , as we reported on our portal. Before announcing the results of the competition, we would like to invite you to review the finalists.

Plato Gallery of Contemporary Art

Location: Ostrava, Czech Republic
Studio: KWK Promes
Authors: Robert Konieczny, Michał Lisiński, Dorota Skóra, Tadeáš Goryczka, Marek Golab-Sieling, Agnieszka Wolny-Grabowska, Krzysztof Kobiela, Adrianna Wycisło, Mateusz Białek, Jakub Bilan, Wojciech Fudala, Katarzyna Kuzior, Karol Knap, Damian Kuna, Magdalena Orzeł-Rurańska, Elżbieta Siwiec, Anna Szewczyk, Jakub Pielecha, Kinga Wojtanowska

In the project for the adaptation of a 19th-century slaughterhouse building by KWK Promes studio, the most important element was to preserve what is most valuable in the historic complex, while injecting the spirit of modernity into it for new cultural functions. Attention is drawn to the distinctive doors that form a bridge between the old and the new, contrasting with the existing fabric through the choice of materials and colors. This solution also allows the building to be freely adapted for exhibition purposes. The immediate surroundings of the building have also changed, with greenery and water retention areas introduced.
