Poland's housing estates are home to some seven million people, or one-fifth of the country. Half of them were built in the 1970s, a time most often associated with large-panel blocks of flats, gray uniformity and low standards. The housing estates were often the setting for propaganda films of the Polish People's Republic Newsreels, and later, in the early 1990s, the backdrop for music videos about the hard life on the block.
In the last century, housing estates were supposed to be an opportunity to realize the vision of more accessible and equitable cities of the future. Today, we are asking ourselves anew questions about the possibilities of a new social order and directions for development. What are its priorities, and what can we learn from the example of settlement realizations?
The Academy of Young Architects invites people aged 15-19 to a workshop with Paulina Paga, which will focus on residential architecture - the future of settlements and cities. Paulina Paga is a specialist in architectural education and activities concerning the functioning of public spaces. She deals with the impact of architecture in social dimensions, public consultation and participatory processes. She is the creator of the Museum of Residential Estates, and also runs the Open Grounds Foundation.
The meeting and workshop will take place on Saturday, May 30. Registration is available here. You will receive a link to Zoom after completing the sign-up form.
