Varnishing aparquet floor is not only a way to protect the wooden floor, but also to bring out its natural beauty and give the interior an elegant character. With a properly selected varnish and the right application process, we can protect the parquet from mechanical damage, moisture and scratches, while highlighting the unique structure of the wood.

Varnishing parquet - step by step

Surface preparation

  • First, assess the condition of the floor. It may be that in some cases varnishing alone is not enough. In that case, sanding is necessary. If your floor does not require this, you can start preparing for varnishing.

  • Take care of the work area. Secure the walls near the floor with painter's tape to avoid unwanted dirt.

  • Clean and smooth the surface. Sand it with sandpaper, then thoroughly get rid of dust and wash the parquet floor.

  • If the floor has been varnished before, remove old coatings by sanding the surface to bare wood.

Choice of preparation

  • Consider the intensity of use of the varnished floor. Polyurethane preparation is characterized by high durability. It is resistant to abrasion and scratches. Thus, it will work well in rooms with high traffic. Acrylic varnish, on the other hand, is less durable, but environmentally friendly and safe.

  • Choose a varnish with a low content of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to reduce the negative impact on health and the environment. Eco-friendly water-based varnishes are also more allergy-friendly.

  • Choose the right finish. Matte v arnish hides scratches better and gives a natural look. Semi-matte or satin is a compromise between elegance and practicality. High gloss, on the other hand, will work best in modern, elegant interiors.

  • Some varnishes work better with certain types of wood, for example, light varnishes may be more suitable for oak, and darker varnishes for exotic species.

Applying the varnish

  • Read the information on the label of the product you are using.

  • Before you start varnishing, thoroughly mix the product you are using. Then repeat this activity during the work.

  • Plan the varnishing process to move in the direction of the exit of the room.

  • First, varnish the dismantled baseboards.

  • Start painting the floor itself by making cutoffs in the corners. A brush will work best for this.

  • Apply the first coat of paint using a roller with short bristles (up to 8 mm).
  • When the first coat is completely dry (about 4 to 8 hours), perform intercoat sanding. Use 150-180 grit sandpaper for this purpose.

  • After sanding, carefully clean the floor, removing dust, and then wash it.

  • Then apply a second coat of varnish, repeating the previous steps.

  • Leave the varnished parquet floor to dry completely. The floor will be ready for use after about 3-4 days.
