Seamless resin coatings on stairs - a review of the most interesting realizations

29 of July '24

Warsaw, July 9, 2024. - The application of resin systems on stairs requires a considerable amount of time and labor, and appropriate skill and care on the part of the contractor in finishing the details. Due to the requirements for an appropriate anti-slip class, resins with additives such as quartz sand, flakes, marble aggregate are used on stairs. The use of various materials and technologies makes it possible to achieve a wide variety of visual effects, suitable for industrial spaces, as well as for more elegant, decorative interiors. Outdoor flooring systems, including quick-setting, are also available.

Experts from leading resin solutions brand Flowcrete present the most interesting, inspiring staircase realizations.

Attractive colors

Systems of 1 to 2 mm thick, colored resin with quartz sand overlay, are a typical solution that has been used for years. Recently, such finishes have been gaining popularity in public facilities, such as modern office buildings.

Coatings of this type, such as Flowcoat SF41, can be performed on both prefabricated and monolithic stairs. It is extremely important to properly prepare the substrate - the surface of the gears should be even, and any imperfections must be repaired beforehand. A major advantage is the possibility of coloring epoxy resin in almost any color. Due to health and safety regulations, the edges of the first and last steps in the run use strips of resin with increased slip resistance in a contrasting shade or textured metal strips.

Floors that resemble terazzo in appearance, with an orange peel texture

Traditional terrazzo, or cement terazzo, has a smooth surface created by grinding. Due to the cement matrix, over time various defects appear on its surface that require repair.

Renovation of the staircase, without increasing its load, can be done by laying a decorative system based on epoxy resin and colored flakes - Peran PGF Floor Flakes. This system looks similar to terrazzo, but has a slightly non-slip texture reminiscent of orange peel. It is not only safer, but also durable and abrasion-resistant, which maintains an aesthetic appearance for years. The technology makes it possible to achieve many more attractive visual effects than just the one resembling classic terazzo - both by changing the color of the resin and by using various mixtures of colored flakes.

Striking stone carpets

A resin system of the stone carpet type, such as Rustik Glamourstone, is created from marble aggregate, bonded and surrounded by clear epoxy resin. In perception, this unusual material resembles a path piled with precious pebbles and evokes associations with a carpet. The system has a spatial structure, which dampens the sound of footsteps and gives the impression of softness. The application of such a floor on the staircase is a major challenge for the contractor due to the need for great care and precision. With experience and skillful application, however, the "WOW" effect is guaranteed.

Systems with enhanced slip resistance based on colorless resin and colored sand

Resin coatings with colored sand are a favorable solution for stairs in public facilities for several reasons. The rough, rough surface reduces the risk of slips and falls. The quartz content gives this flooring a high abrasion resistance, maintained even under heavy use. The ability to create your own compositions of sand color mixtures allows for many unique visual effects.

Due to the small areas of the steps, all work must be done by hand. In the case of trowelled systems, this requires considerable skill on the part of the contractor. Therefore, for practical reasons, systems are often made on stairs using a backfill method, such as Peran STB Structure.

For stairs located outdoors, solutions based on quick-setting methacrylic resin (MMA) and colored quartz sand, such as those from the Flowfast or Deckshield Rapide groups, work best. These materials are resistant to sunlight, and allow quick application, even in harsh weather conditions - with high humidity and substrate, and at low temperatures.

Making resin systems on stairs is associated with certain limitations - not all solutions allow installation on vertical surfaces. For this reason, when choosing materials, it is worth using the support of technical advisors - experts in resin systems.
