Activists and activists from the City Is Ours organization, in consultation with entrepreneurs running their establishments at Warsaw's Savior Square, have put forward the concept of transforming it into an outdoor café. With their idea, they turned to the mayor of Warsaw Rafal Trzaskowski.
Summer is approaching, and with it the need for city residents to spend hot weekend evenings in the city's bosom, given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and previous temporary closures. Warsaw activists remind us that the pandemic is still ongoing and the need for distance is still present. This would make it possible to set up tables throughout the square. The implementation of the idea is also intended to support local entrepreneurs, who have not had the opportunity to earn more for more than two months.
What should the implementation of the weekend outdoor cafes look like? From Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, the entire square, including the lanes, would turn into an open-air café. Only streetcars would be allowed to pass through. At 10 p.m., the temporary tables would return to their locations, along with willing guests, so as not to disrupt the quiet of the night.
City residents are thirsty for communal activities and the usual urban traffic. By temporarily turning Savior Square into an open-air café, a safe and friendly common space would be created. Vilnius and Gdansk, among others, are currently making such changes. A good idea?
