Neolith®, one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly materials available on the market
In 2019, thanks to carbon footprint offsetting, the Neolith® brand generated no CO₂ emissions at any stage of its processes (gate-to-gate).
Carbon neutral
To achieve its highly regarded "carbon neutral" status, the Neolith® brand applied the internationally recognized GHG Protocol and implemented a dynamic, innovation-driven strategy for sustainability, coupled with high-value-added tactical carbon offsetting. This has made it possible to achieve carbon neutrality for all its operations, particularly by sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. This means that up to 7690 tons of CO emissions were eliminated.
Neolith® carbon neutral
In addition, 90% of the waste generated by Neolith® is recycled and reused in the company's operations or authorized third-party partners; demonstrating the brand's solid commitment to a closed-loop economy.
Neolith® surfaces also embody the aforementioned principles, as up to 48% of panel composition is obtained from recycled materials (depending on the model, to view certificates, visit www.neolith.comzonade-descargas#certificados).
There has also been an upgrade of the machinery fleet to increase energy efficiency, in particular the furnace on the third production line, where an O₂ and pressure control system has been integrated to enable a significant reduction in gas consumption. Add to this a 40% reduction in the use of diesel fuel to power forklifts, and a 20% reduction in hazardous waste.
In addition, a policy has been applied to reduce the use of single-use plastic items, a small but significant step toward carbon neutrality.
Given the vision that has guided the brand since its founding, achieving carbon neutral status represents the realization of one of the company's most important goals. It fills me with pride that architects, designers and consumers can choose Neolith surfaces with the certainty that they are investing in the most environmentally friendly Sintered Stone available on the market, thus enhancing the eco-friendliness of their projects," says Mar Esteve Cortés, Neolith® CMO.
A grain of sand
The Neolith® brand has also implemented a number of environmental projects in line with its sustainability strategy. The ventures are aimed at offsetting and absorbing a certain amount of CO₂ emissions. Looking ahead, one of the ventures deserving the most attention will be implemented in Central America, with the goal of protecting and preserving the unique biodiversity of the Guatemalan coastline.
Corporate social responsibility is not only about ensuring that business practices are as sustainable and ethical as possible, but it is also about adding our own grain of sand for the benefit of the broader community, and in particular it is about helping those who are more vulnerable, José Luis Ramón Neolith® CEO.
As part of the project, Neolith® will participate in efforts to protect the unique biodiversity in the forests and jungles that the region still boasts, contributing to the elimination of the underlying factors of deforestation through effective law enforcement, efficient land-use planning, educational activities, creating economic opportunities and leading sustainable agroforestry initiatives.
The direct effect of the project's activities will be the elimination of 4 million tons of CO₂ by 2021, equivalent to the emissions generated by 440,000 households per year. Considering the duration of the project, which is scheduled for 30 years, the value of eliminated CO₂ emissions will be close to about 22 million tons. In addition, the project will provide significant biodiversity benefits through the protection of more than 400 bird species documented under the project and the habitat of many mammal and reptile species, including 30 species of high conservation value.
Our efforts in the Guatemalan Coastal Conservation Project will bring many benefits, not only in terms of the region's unique biodiversity, but also for the people who live there. They will make it possible to preserve the natural habitat while providing needed socioeconomic stimulation to the local population, one of the poorest in all of Central America - José Luis Ramón Neolith® CEO.
