Modern, comfortable and environmentally friendly. New railroad stations under construction

06 of May '20

Construction work on two small-scale Innovative System Stations in Wielkopolska began earlier this year. The modern stations in Pobiedziska Letnisko and Biskupice Wielkopolskie will soon welcome the first travelers.

A total of thirteen railroad stations are planned to be built and modernized in the Wielkopolska province as part of the Station Investment Program for 2016-2023. Two of them, i.e. Poznań Garbary and Poznań Zachodni, have already been made available after reconstruction, and stations in Pobiedziska Letnisko and Biskupice Wielkopolskie will soon be open to travelers.

The railway stations of Pobiedziska Letnisko and Biskupice Wielkopolskie are the next stations in the Wielkopolska Voivodeship implemented under the Station Investment Program for 2016-2023. These two facilities are the so-called Innovative System Railway Stations, built according to PKP S.A.'s original idea. They are intended to be stations that are accessible to all passengers, modern, comfortable and environmentally friendly," stresses Małgorzata Zielińska, member of the PKP S.A. Management Board.

minimalist architecture

The stations in Pobiedzisko Letniski and Biskupice Wielkopolskie are being implemented in the "Design and Build" mode under the Innovative System Station formula. The buildings being constructed in the area of the interchanges have a simple architectural form - they basically consist of a shelter, under which two mini-pavilions have been located to house the passenger and commercial sections. The dominant feature of the new station buildings is a minimalist clock tower. The passenger section will house a small waiting room and public restrooms. Under the shelter, at both ends, bicycle racks have been located along with a bicycle repair station.

accessibility and safety

In addition to a modern and simple architectural form, the stations will have many improvements. Since they are single-story buildings, potential architectural barriers that could be an obstacle for people with disabilities have already been eliminated in their design. In addition, each will have signage in Braille, pathways for the blind and visually impaired, tactile maps and a restroom adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. An interesting solution to make orientation in the space easier for the visually impaired is the use of contrasting colors for interior finishes.

In addition to the value of wide accessibility, Innovative System Railway Stations are also safe buildings. They will be equipped with monitoring systems, access control, burglary and assault signaling, as well as fire detection. Electronic train arrival and departure boards and a voice information system will facilitate travelers.

pro-environmental solutions

The railway stations implemented under the IDS formula are also pro-environmental stations. Photovoltaic panels with a total capacity of 3 KWp will be installed on the roof of the buildings, which will generate about 2,700 kWh of energy, which will contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2,500 kg/year (at each station). That's about as much carbon dioxide as is absorbed by about 500 sizable trees throughout the year. Another solution is to introduce heat pumps for heating the buildings at the stations, as well as a BMS(Building Management System). This system will monitor the consumption of utilities on an ongoing basis and allow maximum reduction of their consumption. Also environmentally friendly will be the station's lighting, which is not only energy-efficient (LED), but will be switched on only with the help of presence sensors cooperating with light intensity sensors. Air conditioning and building heating will function on a similar basis. Such solutions will not only positively affect the maintenance costs of the facilities, but also minimize their negative impact on the environment.

In the surroundings of the buildings, green areas will be tidied up and a new p avement of concrete slabs and cobblestoneswill be laid, with integrated paths for the visually impaired and blind.

The construction of the new stations in Pobiedziska Letnisko and Biskupice Wielkopolskie cost nearly PLN 4.5 million and PLN 4.4 million, respectively. Both investments are financed by EU funds under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program, and the contractor is a consortium of Heli Factor and Merx.
