Votum separatum for the first prize in the competition for the design of the development of the market in Janov

14 of December '20

A one-stage, open competition for the development of an urban-architectural concept for the development and construction of the market - Grunwaldzki Square, John Paul II Square and Church Street in Janów - was resolved on December 9. The Janów Municipality entrusted the organization of the competition to select the best concept in terms of function, use and composition to the Katowice branch of SARP.

On behalf of the Janów Municipality, the Napraw Sobie Miasto Foundation organized public consultations, which were later used to create the competition guidelines. They showed, among other things, that the rebuilt market square should become, first and foremost, a showcase of the municipality, a recreational place or park, and a place for meetings and integration of residents with food and beverage outlets, a fountain and resting places.

votum separatum

The1st prize was awarded to Michal Stangel and Tomasz Bradecki, who collaborated with Filip Gawin, Marlena Michalska and Natalia Holos on the competition project.

In its verdict, the Competition Jury pointed out elements requiring changes in the project, including re-analysis of individual fragments of the establishment, consideration of the necessity to change the topography of the area, or consideration of the sense of locating small architecture and cubature objects in some parts of the competition area.

The decision of the jury was disagreed with by the SARP Competition Judges (Marcin Brataniec, Danuta Fredowicz, Aleksander Krajewski, Jacek Krych, Joanna Małecka and Mikołaj Szubert-Tecl), who issued a special statement:

As judges of the SARP competition, representatives of the architectural community, we do not agree with the verdict of the Competition Jury awarding 1st prize to work No. 170-232523. The functional, spatial, communication and architectural-building solutions proposed in the work in any scale are inadequate for the space of the market in Janow and do not correctly respond to the contemporary requirements for this type of public space. Our attempts to point out the weaknesses of the work, illustrate the consequences of such a choice for further stages of the public procurement and, consequently, the implementation of the contract on the basis of the work and the recommendations formulated for it, unfortunately did not meet with the understanding of the majority of judges .In view of the above, we decided to express a votum separatum from the verdict of the Competition Jury.

The2nd prize in the competition was won by Paweł Gałeczka for:

a clear proposal for arranging the space of the market, as an open and homogeneous in architectural expression interior with an island of greenery preserving and organizing the existing tree stand. Appreciated the preservation of existing values and an attempt to solve the difficult problem of the road cutting through the square by correcting the geometry and unifying the floor.

The3rd place was awarded to a team of architects, including designers from NM architects studio Tomasz Marciniewicz, Zuzanna Szpocińska and Jerzy Grochulski.

The jury appreciated the attempt to formulate a comprehensive development of the market space, taking into account the possible future change of the location of the national road. The Competition Jury's attention was also drawn to the decisive separation of the open square from vehicular traffic routes through a green buffer.
