CEMEX in Poland has introduced a line of Vertua® concretes with reducedCO2 emissions. The decarbonization of these products is made possible through the use of improved formulations based on low-carbon raw materials, as well as the optimization of production technology and the supply chain. This is a milestone for the company in achieving its goal of reducingCO2 emissions in the construction industry.
CEMEX is committed to mitigating climate change around the world. The company's vision is aimed at leading a carbon-neutral economy. Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, which is why the company's goal is to reduceCO2 emissions at its production facilities in Europe by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990.
The expansion of CEMEX's product portfolio with Vertua® concretes is an important contribution to the development of low-carbon building materials. Vertua® concrete mixtures are designed for every stage of a construction project. They are specially matched to the customer's needs in terms of technical parameters. They enable companies to significantly reduce their carbon footprint in the construction process, in accordance with new environmental laws and regulations and the commitments set forth in the Paris Agreement.
As of this spring, two types of product are available to customers on the Polish market: Vertua® classic with up to a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and Vertua® plus with up to a 50% reduction in emissions, compared to the reference concrete, based on the most popular Portland cement on the market, CEM I 42.5R.In both products, it is possible to further offsetCO2 (using an emissions offset mechanism) allowing the product to achieve full climate neutrality. In this regard, CEMEX Poland is working with Natural Capital Partners, a company specializing in carbon offsetting and climate neutrality projects.
Vertua® is part of the goal to provide all CEMEX customers around the world with net zeroCO2 concrete by 2050. Last year, the company in the European region met its existingCO2 reduction target of 35% - a decade ahead of the deadline for CEMEX to meet this goal globally.
CEMEX launched itsCO2-reduced Vertua® products in France in July 2018, and they also appeared in the UK and Germany in 2020. The company will gradually introduce Vertua® products in the other countries where it does business.
CEMEX's climate action strategy, launched in February 2020, outlines the company's vision to move toward a carbon-neutral economy. All of CEMEX Poland's cement plants are certified under the ISO 9001:2008 quality standard, the ISO 14001:2004 environmental standard, the PN-N 18001:2004 occupational health and safety standard and the ISO 50001:2011 energy standard. In addition, the Cement Plant in Chelm and the Milling Plant in Gdynia are registered under the EMAS III Regulation.
