On June 29, Polskie Koleje Państwo S.A. signed a contract for the construction of a new railroad station in Pruszcz Gdański. The investment is intended as a solution to the problem of traffic exclusion. The new station is to be more functional and modern, and its construction is expected to take about two years.
The construction of the station is the result of a tender that was conducted since December last year. It was won by PBE Elbud Gdańsk S.A., which, according to the contract, is expected to put the facility into operation in mid-2023. The investment is being carried out as part of the 2016-2023 Station Investment Program with EU funding from the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program.
The initiative to build a railroad station in Pruszcz Gdanski was created in 2016, when the burning issue for the local community turned out to be the problem of transportation exclusion. Over the years, there have been calls to create not only new transportation lines for local residents, but also new comfortable places where travelers wait for transportation.
The agreement with the contractor for the Pruszcz Gdański train station is another element in counteracting transportation exclusion. Thanks to this, the residents of another city will gain access to safe and comfortable rail infrastructure. I hope that the modern station building in Pruszcz Gdański will become the center of the local community and facilitate rail travel ," Deputy Infrastructure Minister Andrzej Bittel said about the investment.
As you can see, the authorities have decided to take the problem seriously, as the Pruszcz Gdański station is another such facility in Pomerania. Only this year two were opened in Pszczolki and Prabuty.
We are proceeding with the next stage of work - in the coming days we will start construction work in accordance with the project prepared on behalf of PKP S.A. The new station will be implemented in the Innovative System Station formula ," said Ireneusz Maślany, member of the PKP S.A. management board.
modernity, functionality and simplicity
According to the announcement, the new station is to be much more functional than the old one, which will be demolished. The design is dominated by modernity, simplicity and geometry. MERITUM PROJEKT Marek Myrcik architectural studio is responsible for the implementation project.
A simple, geometric body, a dominant clock tower and an elevation of glass, aluminum and clinker brick will be the hallmark of the building. The travel service space, i.e. the lobby serving as a waiting area and the future retail space, will be maximally illuminated through the use of glazing, while the station's technical facilities will be hidden behind a clinker brick facade, which will be decorated with a geometric pattern. The body of the new building will be complemented by an integrated shelter, under which benches for travelers and bicycle racks will be located , PKP S.A. announcements read.

An interesting solution has been applied to the travelers' service space inside the building - it has been limited to toilets and a lobby serving as a waiting room. There will be benches, display cases for timetables or electronic boards with information on train departures and arrivals.
The building was also designed with respect for the needs of people with disabilities. Architectural barriers were eliminated already at the initial design stage, and various improvements were made for passengers. Among them are guided paths in the station building and its immediate surroundings, signage in Braille, contrasting interior colors and tactile boards with the station plan. Similar station designs to the one in Pruszcz Gdański have been implemented in Oświęcim, Bielsk Podlaski and Nidzica, among others. The investor argues that they are characterized by innovation.

emphasis on ecology and safety
The new railway station in Pruszcz Gdański is also to be ecological and safe. Energy-efficient lighting is to be installed in the building, along with automatic controls. In turn, photovoltaic panels are to be designed on the roof.
Thermal comfort in the building will be ensured by appropriately selected building materials with low heat transfer coefficient, as well as air-to-air heat pumps. The operation of all equipment and installations at the station will be supervised by the BMS (Building Management System), which is also responsible for optimizing the consumption of utilities. An important element of the investment is the improvement of the security of people and property, including the installation of new systems: monitoring, access control, burglary and assault signaling and fire protection , the press release reads.
The arrangement of the station's immediate surroundings and traffic organization will change. Sidewalks and an access road will be redesigned, as well as green areas. Right next to the station, two parking spaces each will be designed for people with disabilities and electric cars, as well as 15 bicycle racks with a repair post. The arrangement of the space around the building will be complemented by elements of small architecture, including: benches, garbage cans and lighting.
