The Adam Mickiewicz Institute has announced an open competition for the curatorial design of an exhibition or installation to be shown in the Polish pavilion at this year's London Design Biennale. This will be the third presentation of Polish design at the London Biennale.
The idea behind the competition is that the concept of the pavilion should simultaneously express an unconventional approach to the presentation and popularization of knowledge about Polish design thought, as well as remain consistent with the character and theme of the entire event. Also important in the evaluation of the competition entries will be the aspect of interactivity of the presented concept: the project should engage visitors from different backgrounds and allow interaction with them. The submitted works will be evaluated by a jury consisting of Professor Andrzej Szczerski, Ivan Blasi, Victoria Broackes, Tomasz Slawinski, Tomek Rygalik, Barbara Krzeska and Barbara Schabowska-Maszenda.
Projects can be submitted until 27.02.2020, 4:00 pm.
The curatorial project should include the concept of the exhibition or installation, a full scenario with visualization or sketch and an estimate of the project's production. The curator of the project, and in the case of a curatorial team at least one person, must be competent to ensure a high level of presentation, a good knowledge of contemporary design and architecture, including the phenomena occurring on its international scene, curatorial experience in organizing exhibitions in the field of design, new media or architecture (a minimum of two foreign exhibitions) is also required.
The London Design Biennale - an international gathering of designers, curators and design studios - is one of the most important industry events in the world, and its main goal is to present national exhibitions. The third edition of the event will take place from September 8-27, 2020, at Somerset House, a center for contemporary culture in London. This year's installment of the event will center around a debate on the universal impact of design on contemporary culture, and will explore design's potential as a transformative global tool with the power to inspire and inform.
The artistic director of the London Design Biennale 2020 is Es Devlin, an award-winning British artist and designer, who has chosen the slogan " Resonance " ("Resonance") as the event's theme, emphasizing that we live in an age of hyper-resonance, and that resonance - triggered by design projects or artists' creative efforts - can positively change behavior and transform societies.
Designers, thinkers, artists and creatives have the power to exert an astonishing influence on audiences, forcing them, as it were, to fundamentally change their perspectives, using the mass communication networks now available to promote specific ideas and practices for building a more sustainable future, according to Es Devlin. - We are a community of designers, measuring ourselves against a common global challenge from a culturally diverse perspective: the collective resonance of the ideas and actions we propose should hold the promise of real transformation.
The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is preparing a Polish pavilion for the London Biennale for the third time. In 2016, during the premiere edition of the event, Polish design was represented by an exhibition entitled. "Elective Corpse: anatomy of utopia," curated by Maria Jeglinska and Klara Czerniewska. In 2018, the Polish pavilion showed the exhibition "A Matter Of Things" by Małgorzata Wesołowska. The project, based on a subjective and emotional selection of objects known from the history of the last hundred years of Poland, was appreciated by the organizers of the event, awarding the exhibition an Honourable Mention.
More information about the competition can be found on the organizers' website.
