The future of the Polsad area in Krakow is a topic that arouses many emotions and inspires bold urban visions. Two projects have been developed in response to the challenges of modern cities: "Resilience in the City - Survival or Rise?" (design team: Łucja Budzan IGiGP UJ, Jan Bińkowski KMiW AGH, Magdalena Salus IS UJ, Marta Andrzejewska IS UJ, Bartosz Zarzecki IGiGP UJ, Patrycja Skwarna WAW ASP, Magdalena Sutor WAW ASP, Zuzanna Bełch WAW ASP, Kacper Michalski WI SWPS, Jakub Słoboda KMiW AGH, Maja Sobczak-Rzewnicka WA PK) and "NA_POLE_SA" (design team: Aleksandra Slowik WAW ASP, Patrycja Molska WAW ASP, Callista Bervoets WAW ASP Erasmus, Natalia Jarocka WAW ASP, Bartosz Staszczak WI SWPS, Julia Lasek IS UJ, Marianna Kasperuk KMiW AGH, Anna Zaletańska IGiGP UJ, Krzysztof Grabarek IGiGP UJ, Gabriela Kawa WA PK, Dominika Podgajny IS UJ). Both concepts, realized as part of the "New Space" workshop, focus on creating spaces that are resilient to climate and social change, while integrating male and female residents. Each of these projects offers a different vision of land use, but they share a common idea of creating a green, functional and engaging space for the local community.

urban residency - survival or growth

The first concept assumes that any public space in the city should be flexible, multifunctional and resilient to environmental changes. The design emphasizes co-creation, fluidity, flexibility and engagement, treating the relationship between humans and nature as a key element of urban space. Solutions that allow dynamic adaptation to the needs of residents and changing environmental conditions are included.

The project's main objectives include the Place of Silence, which is four greenhouses equipped with mobile panels that can serve as reading rooms, relaxation spaces or meeting places. Thanks to modern technologies that improve acoustics, comfortable resting conditions will be provided. Another important element is the Walk Among the Treetops - alleys leading through the area planted with fruit trees, enabling environmental education and fruit picking. There is also a Spring Greenhouse, which is a community garden where people will be able to grow plants all year round. The project also includes the construction of ponds that serve as micro-ecosystems to support biodiversity, as well as the modernization of the horse stud by using special solutions to improve animal comfort and reduce urban noise.

The premise of this concept is to create a space that not only survives in a dynamically changing environment, but also allows the local community to develop and actively participate in shaping it.

NA_POLE_SAD - revitalization and return to nature

The second concept focuses on revitalizing the Polsad area by applying traditional rural solutions in a modern way. The main idea is food self-sufficiency, education and integration of residents through culture and ecology. The project incorporates a closed crop cycle, with plants grown in the greenhouse going to a café in the revitalized mansion, and waste being turned into compost, promoting sustainability and reducing waste of resources.

One of the key elements of the concept is the revitalization of the mansion, which is to become a cultural center, a venue for concerts, exhibitions and meetings of residents/residents. The preservation of the existing horse stud is also envisaged, responding to the needs of the local community. The project includes improving conditions for the animals and increasing the comfort of visitors to the area. An important aspect is environmental education, including learning about the food chain and agricultural techniques. In addition, noise reduction is planned by setting up noise barriers along the street, which will positively affect the comfort of residents and animals.

The project focuses on adapting the city to changing climatic conditions and bringing residents back into close contact with nature and food production processes. This approach allows for the creation of a harmonious space where tradition and modernity merge into a coherent whole.

The future of the Polsad sites

Both concepts offer an innovative approach to the revitalization of the Polsad grounds, proposing modern yet nature-inspired solutions. The first design emphasizes space flexibility and co-creation, while the second draws inspiration from traditional methods of self-sufficiency and ecology. The choice of a particular vision will influence the future shape of this part of Krakow, introducing solutions that will allow residents to spend time actively, educate and integrate in a friendly, green environment.
