A new woonerf in Gdynia will be created!

29 of May '20

Another "street of the future" is to be built in Gdynia. Following the great success of the woonerf on Abraham Street, a new pedestrian-friendly zone will be located on Peacock Street in Pustki Ciskowskie. Coming from the Netherlands, the idea of a friendly street is becoming increasingly popular in Poland. Lodz and Gdynia already have woonerfs, Gdansk and Warsaw are planning them.

On this street it is pedestrians who have priority - car traffic is heavily restricted. The boundary between the sidewalk and the road is blurred - this is to encourage the street's residents to wander freely. The space of woonerfs is landscaped with greenery and small architecture. Most often, small serviceand commercial establishments develop around them. Poland's first woonerf was created on 6 Sierpnia Street in Lodz in 2014.

Awoonerf on Abrahama Street can already be boasted by residents of Gdynia since June last year, as we wrote about in the text Parks instead of parking lots! Another one is to be created on the outskirts of the city on Pawia Street in the Pustki Cisowskie-Demptowodistrict.

Gdynia Roads and Greenery Authority has announced proceedings for the design of this investment. Construction work is expected to start next year. In addition to creating a woonerf, the drainage system will be improved, and the street will be decorated with small architecture. The existing greenery is to remain intact.
