They will restore the avenue of trees, chase away cars. Competition for the development of the Long Gardens!

26 of July '24

Gdansk wants to transform another piece of the city center. The city has announced an implementation competition to develop a concept for the development of Dlugie Ogrody Street, which is an extension of the Royal Route. Currently this section of the city has questionable aesthetics and is dominated by cars.

Although Dlugie Ogrody Street is an extension of the Royal Route and Stągiewna Street, it is far from a showpiece of the city center. The need for its reconstruction has been talked about in Gdansk for years. The future of the street was recently widely discussed during a workshop with residents. These demanded a friendly, non-tourist-dominated space, with greenery, restored trees and orderly parking.

city announces competition

There are many indications that this part of Gdansk will finally change its face. On Friday, July 26, the City, together with the Gdansk Roads and Greenery Authority, announced a one-phase, unlimited and implementation competition for the development of a concept for the development of Dlugie Ogrody Street, as an extension of the Royal Route, with the restoration of the avenue of trees. The revitalization will cover an area of about 2.7 hectares from the Stągiewny Bridge, to the flyover in the course of Elbląska Street.

Today the area looks decidedly different than it did before World War II. Therefore, it is planned to restore it to its former glory. It is therefore necessary to comprehensively rebuild the road and its surroundings, as well as to restore the avenue of trees along the street, the City reports.

The site will primarily gain more greenery by reducing the number of parking spaces. Designers competing in the competition must "pay special attention to the qualities of architectural and urban composition, affecting the attractiveness of the area, consideration of the historical aspect, and the quality and correctness of the adopted functional and spatial solutions." It is also important that the works include pro-environmental solutions, taking into account climate change.

The competition jury will be composed of twelve specialists in the field of architecture and urban planning, as well as representatives of the Pomeranian Regional Monument Conservator, the Office of the City Architect, the Gdansk Development Office and the Fahrenheit University Association. The winner will be invited to negotiate on a sole-source basis and sign a contract for the project.

The total prize pool for the competition is PLN 120,000. The deadline for submission of works is November 8, 2024, and the competition is scheduled to be resolved in mid-December.
