Until a few years ago, one could only dream about a railroad to the southern districts of Gdansk. This is about to change: the provincial government and the authorities of Gdansk have signed a contract with a contractor to design the agglomeration section of PKM South. The railroad is to be an impulse for further changes - around the new stops there will be a chance to create public spaces, jobs and services.
New construction is increasing in this part of the city, but development is chaotic: the south of Gdansk lacks services, recreation areas and a developed public transportation network. A change in the city government's policy toward Gdansk South has only been visible for a few years. And this is mainly in announcements.
plans are in place, though late
A study competition for the concept of a district center located at the junction of the Jasien and Ujeścisko-Lostowice districts was settled in November. According to the planners' assumptions, it is to realize "the idea of a fifteen-minute city, in which broadly defined services are located within a short walk from the place of residence." However, you will have to wait a long time for the effects. The results of the competition are to be used to prepare the provisions of the local plan. In addition, there are plans to prepare a 77-hectare South Park, based on existing greenery .

The PKM South railroad line is also expected to improve the quality of life for residents of the southern districts of Gdansk and the surrounding communities of Pruszcz Gdanski, Kolbudy and Zhukowo. Importantly, neighborhood centers with jobs and services, including social services, are planned around the stops.
If the local governments preparing the project (Pomeranian Voivodeship and Gdansk Municipality) succeed in obtaining external funding for its implementation, the agglomeration section of PKM South has a chance to be built by 2030. For now, an agreement has been signed with the designer - a consortium of three companies, led by Infra Centrum Doradztwa. The new section of the PKM will be an extension of the existing SKM line from Gdansk Downtown to Kowal - along with accompanying road investments by the city of Gdansk. The gross cost of the project is as much as PLN 44 million.

- We are absolutely convinced that this project, due to the anticipated traffic and traveler streams, will not only significantly affect the functioning of Gdansk, but will also serve the interests of the entire Pomeranian region," said Mieczyslaw Struk, marshal of the Pomeranian voivodeship, during the signing of the agreement.
- This is a very demanding project, as it passes through very urbanized parts of the city," added Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, mayor of Gdansk.
14 minutes
Thanks to this investment, the travel time from the planned Kowale interchange to the center of Gdansk will shorten, from about an hour now, to 14 minutes. It is worth recalling that on the entire approximately 7-kilometer-long agglomeration section of the PKM South from Gdansk Downtown to Kowale, the railroad line will run at ground level for only a few hundred meters. The entire rest of the route will be laid on flyovers, in deep trenches or tunnels. Of the six train stops planned for this section, two will be located on flyovers, two in trenches, and two underground (like the subway). Added to this are two road investments by the city of Gdansk accompanying the railroad: Nowa Sandomierska Street and Phase II of Nowa Swietokrzyska Street.
The southern districts of Gdansk alone will be home to more than 100,000 people by 2030 - not counting the surrounding villages of the Pruszcz Gdanski, Kolbudy and Zhukowo municipalities.
