Tczew railroad station opened after modernization. The facade has been refreshed and the interiors upgraded

20 of August '21

The modernization of the Tczew railroad station, which took almost two years, has ended. The result of the work is a refreshed, modernist-style building. A number of progressive and functional solutions have been applied to its interior.

A newly renovated railroad station in Tczew (Pomeranian Voivodeship) was opened on August 19. The modernization work took two years. They were carried out as part of the 2016-2023 Railway Station Investment Program with EU funding.

A refreshed post-war building with a modern twist

The modernization project, which was developed by the Allplan Investment Organization Company, primarily involved renovating the old and dilapidated building, as well as modernizing it and bringing it up to European standards for serving travelers. The station was built a few years after the war, in 1949, based on a design by arch. Zygmunt Polatynski.

The plan was to restore the original external appearance of the station as much as possible, so the facade of the building was comprehensively renovated. It was enriched with new dark red tiles, imitating bricks, which tastefully contrast with the light-colored window and door woodwork.

The interior of the building focuses on modernity, minimalism and functionality. Gray and white dominate there. The interior is illuminated by minimalist fixtures located in the coffered ceiling. In the lobby, which serves as a waiting room, elements of small architecture have appeared: graphite-colored metal benches, display cases with timetables, electronic boards with information on train arrivals and departures, as well as a completely new voice information system. Certainly an interesting feature is the escalator, by which passengers can move to level -1, where a small waiting room, a shopping arcade, the headquarters of the Railway Security Guard and offices for railroad companies have been located.

friendliness to the excluded and the environment

After reconstruction, the station is also a friendlier place for seniors and people with disabilities. It has installed new elevators and automatic doors. The surface has been paved with so-called guided paths. New features include signage in Braille or tactile plans for the station.

As the investor, PKP S.A., emphasizes. , the building also meets ecological standards: energy-efficient lighting and photovoltaic panels have appeared. In order to optimize the consumption of electricity, heat and water, a BMS (Building Management System) was also installed to control the operation of installations and equipment on the premises.

The surroundings of the station have also changed: a new pavement was laid, which refers to the existing one in the square in front of the building, and green areas were cleaned up. Bicycle racks were located at the southern façade, along with a single-track repair station.

The construction work was carried out by Poleko Construction. The cost of the modernization is nearly PLN 17.9 million.

The Tczew station is one of several stations in the Pomeranian Voivodeship included in the Station Investment Program for 2016-2023. In A&B we also wrote about the construction of the station in Pruszcz Gdański and the reconstruction of the Gdańsk Wrzeszcz station.

The 2016-2023 Station Investment Program is one of the projects envisaged for implementation as part of the "Strategy for Responsible Development until 2020 (with an outlook until 2030)." Thanks to it, 189 railway station investments will be carried out for a total of PLN 1.6 billion. As a result of the measures taken at the stations, the level of passenger service will be improved and there will be integration of railroads with other modes of transport.
